Miss China Universe 2009, Miss World 2007, a Comparison, and a blog entry about Liu Xiang

Ok… because someone asked me who China’s entry into Miss Universe was:

840a0ea36a0a3085caefd081

Name: Wang Jingyao

Height: 182 cm

Measurements: 81/61/90

I don’t know anything else about her but this particular request reminded me  of another request, by another commenter to translate Miss World 2007, Zhang Zilin‘s blog entry in defense of Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang, which deeply impressed me when I read it; it was beautifully written.  Not to mention that she took her time to write an essay about the matter because she could help, and I think that’s the beauty of these “beauty pageants”, they find people who in general love helping others.

So I’ve put the translation below the cut, and I also talk about the difference between Miss World vs Miss Universe as it pertains to China.

Alec Su for "Harper's Bazaar Men's Style"

I’m starting to really love Harpaar’s Bazaar Men’s Style…while it has a way to go before it matches the photoshoots of its original counterpart for the ladies, it’s slowly getting better. This time Alec Su gets featured. I’m still wary of watching his Princess of Returning Pearl but Alec Su’s recent, darker endeavors are much more interesting. From his role as a crazy narcissistic, and verbose actor in Call for Love 2 to the  glimpse we got to see of his panicked fear at torture in the upcoming The Message, his acting is getting to show its range off, beyond his Qiong Yao heroes of the past. This photoshoot shows that darker Alec Su off well. His Huang Zhu Ge Ge alumnus, Fan Bingbing also recently had a photoshoot for Marie Claire, but I’m getting sick of seeing her face, so I’ll just link to it here. Go below the cut for more Alec.

Zhang Lin Obliterates World Record in 800 m Freestyle by 6 1/2 Seconds

I watched the swimming in the Olympics only knowing Wu Peng, but then this cutie grabbed my attention when he got silver in the 400 m freestyle…only 0.58 seconds behind Park Taehwan.  Even though he was sad about his loss, he was so adorable in the videos, and looked like actor Tong Dawei, except so much sweeter and cuter…and now you know why I watch sports. But, he really was one of my favorites at the Games (not an easy thing considering I loved the entire Chinese gymnastics, diving and badminton, men’s volleyball, etc teams). And now at the World Championships in Italy he dominated  in the 800m race, beating second place  by a full three seconds.

Yu Quan

This is proof that Cfensi is increasingly not the best place to keep up with alternatives to Cpop. I came to this sad sad realization when I discovered that these guys had released new albums, and I didn’t know about it even though they’re all mainstream.  Instead I entreat you to join More CMusic at livejournal to keep more up-to-date.

Jane Zhang Kicks it Up for Barcelona

Jane Zhang is officially too cool for all of us. We all know that she has that polished voice with incredible range, and an acute business sense that has lead her all the way to success. But this girl has many sides, and one of them is being a rabid soccer fan, one who’s great with predictions and done World Cup commentating. Her favorite team is FC Barcelona and  she was invited to support their Chinese fansite through a new photoshoot, where she wears her own official jersey, emblazoned with Z.Jane and the number of her favorite player, Messi, whom she got to meet and gave her CDs to. The pictures will be featured in the August issue of a sports magazine. Go below for more pics and blog entries she’s done related to the last World Cup.

Most dramatic series of the year goes to…

..Super Girls?

elle2 panhongyue

Pan Hongyue may seem pompous, but she has our respect for not hiding her disgust at the judges after the 15to10 competition.

Meteor Shower seems to have already lost the dramatic category before it even started. Super Girls’ scriptwriters are probably way better. What other drama has the music, the dancing, the pretty girls, the tears, the triumphs, the unsung heroes, the evil henchmen, and of course, the righteous Judge Bao (somebody on baidu tried to link his heritage to Judge Bao Qingtian) like Super Girls?

Friday’s Super Girls’s defining moment was Bao Xiaobo’s comments after Li Xiaoyun played the guitar for her song:

Li Xiaoyun, you know, on this stage, playing the guitar on this stage is very dangerous. But I want to thank you for reminding me of someone. Her name is Wang Zhixin, and she once sung a song called Match Heaven. I once said her music striked straight into the heart. I want to thank her and thank you.

I cried the moment he mentioned Wang Zhixin. But wow, if last week’s comment about “protective forces” wasn’t direct enough, this week’s comment about the guitar is way too obvious. (He’s hinting at the fact that Wang Zhixin got kicked out so she wouldn’t compete with Zeng Yike as the guitars).

The person who took the heat of the blame for making anyone but Zeng Yike playing the guitar being in danger is the outspoken Gao Xiaosong, who we first became familiar with after he told HIT-5 their song was “outdated” and that “mainland music wasn’t pure because they don’t have enough coastal lines.” It turns out that MT-muzik, the songwriters behind HIT-5′s “Say U love me again” and “I want you to know” actually wrote a song in response to him, titled “Hello, Gao Xiaosong.” It’s well-written, if unpolished.

"Lian Ai Ba" Begins Production

Img1302098_x

L-R Director, Chen Kun, Yuan Quan, Debbie Goh, and Lu Yi

Remember when I said Chen Kun and Yuan Quan were going to star in something? Well, production commenced, and the other two cast members are Lu Yi and Debbie Goh! That’s quite a cast, and those first three names are all so good at singing that I’m crying that this isn’t a musical.  But that’s okay, because it’s a romantic comedy, which isn’t a genre I’m adverse to. “Liang Ai Ba” (Dating) is based off a hugely popular novel about a love triangle between a divorced woman, her ex-husband and his best friend. Go below for synopsis and some pictures from filming.

U2398P28T3D2612790F326DT20090716104612

Summer films are upon us, and leading ladies are not only arriving in theaters but hitting the magazine stands in China, so let’s take a look them, and the mags themselves because these shoots were much nicer than the last set I posted. Wang Luodan, in her film debut does a small shoot for Elle, while Zhang Ziyi gets the cover. Other leading ladies are the usual crowd, Fan Bingbing in Harpaar’s Bazaar and Sun Li in L’Officiel,  in futuristic looking shoots. Jacqueline Li Xiaolu does Hotspot, my fav weekly magazine.  Also looking gorgeous are the contestants for Dragon TV’s show Dragon Angels, which promises future leading ladies.
