Most dramatic series of the year goes to…

..Super Girls?

elle2 panhongyue

Pan Hongyue may seem pompous, but she has our respect for not hiding her disgust at the judges after the 15to10 competition.

Meteor Shower seems to have already lost the dramatic category before it even started. Super Girls’ scriptwriters are probably way better. What other drama has the music, the dancing, the pretty girls, the tears, the triumphs, the unsung heroes, the evil henchmen, and of course, the righteous Judge Bao (somebody on baidu tried to link his heritage to Judge Bao Qingtian) like Super Girls?

Friday’s Super Girls’s defining moment was Bao Xiaobo’s comments after Li Xiaoyun played the guitar for her song:

Li Xiaoyun, you know, on this stage, playing the guitar on this stage is very dangerous. But I want to thank you for reminding me of someone. Her name is Wang Zhixin, and she once sung a song called Match Heaven. I once said her music striked straight into the heart. I want to thank her and thank you.

I cried the moment he mentioned Wang Zhixin. But wow, if last week’s comment about “protective forces” wasn’t direct enough, this week’s comment about the guitar is way too obvious. (He’s hinting at the fact that Wang Zhixin got kicked out so she wouldn’t compete with Zeng Yike as the guitars).

The person who took the heat of the blame for making anyone but Zeng Yike playing the guitar being in danger is the outspoken Gao Xiaosong, who we first became familiar with after he told HIT-5 their song was “outdated” and that “mainland music wasn’t pure because they don’t have enough coastal lines.” It turns out that MT-muzik, the songwriters behind HIT-5′s “Say U love me again” and “I want you to know” actually wrote a song in response to him, titled “Hello, Gao Xiaosong.” It’s well-written, if unpolished.

Nihao Gao Xiaosong – MT muzik (translations of selected parts below the cut)
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0aKxUlhU0M]

You say that mainland music is mundane and bland
I think you forgot what gave you all your food and land
The mention of Taiwan makes you as excited as if you were on steroids
Give you a piece of bone and you’ll chew like you were nothing more than a mutt.
If you forgot you age, you should look at the calendar
You’re not even as cool as Guo Ziyu who came much later

Stop obnoxiously misdirecting talent
YO the current mainland music is going to make you ashamed

Want to kill my music? It ain’t that easy.
Want to challenged mainland music? First crawl over and get my approval.
Don’t hold your nose high just because you’ve been on a few skits
To say my music is outdated you must have some guts
Don’t use music as an excuse, Mr.Lonely
Hurry and take your music and go back to your family.

You say we’ve been affected by your music since we were young
you’re right, maybe if we didn’t listen to them we would’ve been even better
I didn’t complain, didn’t comment on your mom or your grandmother
but here you are, shameless trashing China’s musicians.

As newcomers we really should need our seniors to give us suggestions
but you can’t say our music is outdated without evidence
with your level, don’t go around the public making a scene
beware people behind you will see your flaws

final thoughts on this week’s Super Girls :
Elle China needs a better photographer, and a even better stylist. Or even better, how about a new editor-in-chief who doesn’t seem to hate the Super Girls minus one? Huang Ying should’ve beat Tan Lina. Props to Yu Kewei and the band for turning this into this. She should’ve won this round and Jiang Yingrong the last one:

Darn, the link for Nihao Gao Xiaosong is not working. I don’t think MT muzik should’ve stooped that low as to attacking Mr. Gao because they’re making themselves sound immature. People are probably going to think the company is being run by unmannered, rebellious adolescents. I guess this is still a form of publicity for Hit-5.

  2. cfensi says:

MT muzik is not the company behind HIT-5. They are a hip-hop/rap songwriting duo from Beijing. They’re kind of new in the Chinese music industry, and for a CMO to criticize their music like that on TV, well, it could have killed off their career. I was really pissed at Gao Xiaosong when I first watched the episode where he criticized the song. Now I think Gao Xiaosong is just a big sleazeball for all the other crap he’s done. I hope he goes back to America and stops putting his opinions in Chinese music shows because those opinions are awful.

  3. julie says:

    @angela: vid isnt working wither…
But i don’t think they sound immature, in fact, i think the song represents how many many people feel

Plus, the lyrics are pretty funny and true

  4. julie says:

    found the link:
    http://www.tudou.com/programs/view/rrKL7JwLggQ/

Wow it’s pretty catchy i really like it….im lol ing at the guo ziyu part

  5. julie says:

    HAHA this is brilliant!!!!!!
Gao Xiaosong is Voldemort and MT Muzic is Fred and George!!!!!!
    This is very well writen
    I love this…

I don’t know who I hate more, ZYK or GXS, probably GXS because ZYK wouldnt be here because of him.

  6. cfensi says:

I editing this to private until the video gets up. It’s really not the same without the song.

  7. hobielover says:

Eww, that “Elle” photoshoot with the weird hair is so bad!

I think instead of being immature, the move on MT Muzik’s part proved that Mainland music wasn’t “outdated,” which was a dumb thing to say in the first place. It’s just a stereotype, and if Mr. Gao runs on ridiculous stereotypes, he needed attacking. Taiwan does, after all, have it’s share of talentless idols and covers of foreign songs, so looking down on Mainland music as “impure” when it’s only getting started isn’t right and doesn’t help anyone.

  8. julie says:

My love for MT-Muzic has gone up because of this song…
Is this a joke thingy? I really want them to publish this haha…

It would be hilarious if all the eliminated supergirls go on stage one more time and perform this song

  9. julie says:

Im curious: who’s the one singing?

  10. idarklight says:

    @julie
my translations are the super moderated and censored version… if Super Girls sung this song, I think Long Danni and SARFT would faint on spot. But then, perhaps MT-muzik can edit the lyrics…the original version of “say u love me again” also had plenty of obscenities.

I don’t blame Zeng Yike. She’s in for the opportunities of a lifetime, and there’s no reason why she would want to give it up. Gao Xiaosong, on the other hand, is not only harming budding musicians, but also killing Zeng Yike. If she had came out later, not against those girls, she could’ve been liked and not hated.

  11. hobielover says:

@idarklight: Wow, I just now glanced at the lyrics. Very long and very…colorful. Seriously, couldn’t catch any of that on first listen, not even the English parts, but I’m sure SARFT would faint.

  12. mrpeng says:

oh wow. MT-Music is good. Sk-Chill became one of my favorite mainland artists because of his song about innermongolia which was written by MT music.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEqliYMeCBo

i even have his song as the second song for my mainland music youtube video.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxjNXRMx … rofilepage

btw thanks darklight for posting sk-chill song on youtube.

  13. mrpeng says:

btw i also think yu kewei looks better with short hair.

  14. cfensi says:

Isn’t it Huang Ling’s producers that should get the credit for remastering the song?

Ah…I knew Huang Ling’s album must have had a remake somewhere in it if she was with Universal Records. I guess that’s one. Are there more?

  15. A. says:

Gao Xiaosong really really annoys me. So many mean things could be said about him, but I won’t stoop to that level. My god.

At this point, the people who I think need to be eliminated: Pan Chen, Tan Lina, Zeng Yike, in order from least-needed to most-needed to be eliminated.

Funny that he criticizes Mainland music when Taiwan these days seems a bit lacking in real substance major time.

  16. cfensi says:

Well, I wouldn’t say turn it around and say Taiwan’s lacking. Some artists who can’t sing or really do anything can get to the top, but that happens in every country. There’s a lot of great original artists in Taiwan, a lot more than the crappy ones.

I admit it is frustrating, to see people who are basically not talented end up with long careers in music…I don’t know why I care so much though.

  17. julie says:

@idarklight: there was an unedited version of say u luv me again?

  18. irugnotmis says:

Yes, Huang Ying should’ve totally beat Tan Lina. Who need another Jolin Tsai wannabe, but worse?

  19. yelei says:

i havent read the entry yet, but i will come back to it.
So there is a newcomer in China name 林正豪 Lin Zheng Hao, and he ripped off Big Bang’s Farewell.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uu8yypmgFBI
    there’s the MV.

When I read the comments, I just thought those people are freaking ignorant and racist people.
Ugh, but that new guy is kind of dumb for not giving credit to the composer.

  20. cfensi says:

@yelei Yeah Mr Peng already commented about him a month ago…he trained in one of Korea’s best training places or something, so I don’t get why he would do that? Pretty idiotic when it’s his single…

They put up the composer’s blog on tieba, so he’s probably getting flamed by Chinese netizens…

But it’s youtube…so yeah there’s generalization and prejudice everywhere.

  21. Nepheliad says:

Jeez. Gao Xiaosong gets no sympathy from me, but… The song’s a friggin’ diss track, and that era was painful enough in American rap music. =\ I hope there won’t be any further clashes on either end.

  22. julie says:

@yelei: wow the comments were rude…I left a comment too hope i dont get attacked =P

  23. julie says:

@idarklight: wow say u luv me again was very explicit

  24. A. says:

Well, yes, but what I’m trying to say is it’s like the pot calling the kettle black in a way. You can’t ignore faults of your favored to criticize others for the same faults.

As for ZYK… okay, I really wouldn’t mind if she was like a bit more humble, had a more interesting/likeable personality, but seriously?? Like, when you watch videos on Super Girls’ progress, like seriously… there is nothing humbling about her demeanor or ANYTHING. SDLKFWER. My frustration when it comes to that girl.

  25. linny says:

does anyone know where to download Nihao Gao Xiaosong? preferably mp3?

  26. idarklight says:

    @A.

that’s exactly what I feel like Gao Xiaosong is like…his reasoning may make sense if you look at the individual comments. But if you look at them bunched together, I feel like he has no principle, but instead just comes up with whatever he can to back his thoughts at the time.

    For example…
Mixbox: mainland music = too earthy, taiwanese music = pure
blog post: mainland music = pure, taiwanese music = commercialized.

super girls finals 1: Wang Zhixin, you shouldn’t have played the guitar on that song
super girls final 2:Wang Zhixin, you should never sing a song without your guitar.

    He makes me frustrated…

  27. julie says:

@linny: i have the song, gimme ur email, i’ll send it

  28. Nepheliad says:

@idarklight, a lot of critics are like that, since the body of their work comes from making arguments on the fly; when they have to make many of them, they’re bound to overrun some of their own words. But that bit about Wang Zhixin is just moronic – what in the world?

Regarding the “ripoff” song, if he didn’t clearly give credit to the composer, it’s his own fault. It’s lame to not give credit where it’s due. Posted my own comment a moment ago. There’s no problem with doing covers, but if they’re to be featured as prominently as a first single, it’s just not a good idea in general.

  29. yelei says:

watching Super Girl makes me furious.Someone needs to replace the chief editor of Elle.. she isn't all that great -_-

Gao Xiaosong's comments are so weird(?) It does not make sense to me at all. He's getting himself alot and I mean ALOT of antis, but I'm guessing he's in for the “money"

  30. yelei says:

@Nepheliad: His company should be blamed for it, but I’m pretty sure they did that for more publicity. He debuted with a song composed by JJ Lin, yet I guess he wasn’t well-known. It’s funny because when I saw the MV, the lyric is really strange and there were some phrases I’ve never seen before.

Speaking of Judge Bao Qingtian, I’m looking forward to seeing a new version.

  31. Nepheliad says:

Hey, when you’re a critic, it can pay very well to be a controversial one. Also nets a lot of fame, and since the only thing that sells them is their degree of fame/notoriety and their persona (because most don’t actually produce anything of their own making), there’s much less chance of controversy backfiring.

And yeah, I figured as much. But really, since they ARE producing a commodity of some kind (a single – so a tangible product, for that matter), you’d think they’d at least include a nice big credits tag to assure they don’t get washed with mostly negative backlash instead of just attention-grabbing controversy…

A fair share of Chinese artists seem to be using controversy to launch their careers these days; I hope this isn’t a trend, and I wonder what it says about the Chinese music industry. =\

  32. linny says:

@julie, thank you sooo much :D

  33. idarklight says:

    @linny
If you want, give us a comment after julie sent it to you and I can delete your email so people won’t use it to spam you…

I love your name! Chen Ruolin + Wang Ruolin = awesomeness

  35. idarklight says:

…uh…I like the other better….the second half of this is cute, but the first half is really boring. and the other one had brighter, more dreamlike colors.

  36. Anonymous says:

is it weird of me to say that im actually liking the hate song toward gao xiaosong A LOT??? is there any way that i can download the song??!?! the rapping sounds like jay chou’s style. and the beat, even if it’s really simple and kind of hastily put together, is still good :] haha and the lyrics. the way things rhyme and how well the rhythm fits together really impressed me, even if the content itself was not exactly positive. but yeah, if anyone knows of any place that i can download the song, i’ll love you forever :D

hahaha and hit5′s say you love me again was actually pretty good in my opinion. it has a lot more of a kpop feel than a lot of the other chinese songs, and i remember actually thinking, wow! finally china’s catching up in the song trends!! but here he is saying that its outdated?!

  37. julie says:

I’ve sent it to linny, you can remove her email address.

@anonymous: want me to send it to you? email please!

  38. cfensi says:

@julie…can you upload it to megaupload/sendspace/etc..?

And then we’ll put it in random downloads.

  39. julie says:

    Heres the download link:http://www.rayfile.com/files/d857b423-7d5a-11de-9577-0014221b798a/

  40. linny says:

@ idarklight thanx 4 removing my email :) i never really like my name until now haha.

@julie, thanx x1000 i absolutely love the song (it’s stuck in my head hehe)
