Chen Kun Becomes "Dark Horse" of "The Founding of a Republic"

Chen Kun has been singled out in praise for his acting in the film Jian Guo Da Ye, commemorating the PRC’s 60th anniversary (today in China time), not an easy feat when the entire film consists of  stars. He was chosen to act in the film as Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek’s son, Chiang Ching-kuo, future president of Taiwan, because he  had a youthful air about him, as well a brooding pensive quality. He ended up playing it so well, that he was given more screentime while others were cut.

Here he sings red song Yin Shan Hong at the premiere ceremony a few weeks ago. He’s no Huang Ying, but I think he did a good job anyway.

I normally hate to talk  politics in general, but since I am posting about this movie, I’d like to clear up a few things about the political aspect.

Most people have a knee-jerk reaction to this movie, because it’s “propaganda”. Perhaps, but not like you think. Due to closer cross-straight relations, and a celebratory nature of the movie in general, this  will probably show the Nationalist side of the civil war as very sympathetic, which will in turn cause many Chinese youth to wonder what exactly the communists were fighting for in 1949 . And as much as the Mao-led government sucked afterward, the status quo before the civil war gave  every reason for revolution. Frankly, this movie will definitely be much more balanced  and less one-sided than The Patriot was to the British. (more…)

Huan Zhu Ge Ge to be remade

Who'll be the next Vicki Zhao?

Searching for the next Zhao Wei

At first, we all thought it was a joke. Huan Zhu Ge Ge has been a stable of Hunan TV, and many look forward to the trilogy every summer for the past 12 years. And still, it has yet lost its appeal and remains a viewer-getter.

Yet as the official news stack up, it seems to be real. Hunan TV’s editor-in-chief Li Hao even gave an interview about it. Of course, that could be false or done for an alternate purpose, too. It also seems to make sense that the one of the reasons for the new drama is the fact that Hunan TV’s gone HD, which means that HZGG will look fairly weak compared to other dramas broadcasted.

According to ihunantv, the new HZGG will encompass all three seasons in a long, 80-episode-drama. The plot will also be changed by Qiong Yao herself. Cast is yet undecided, and it’s still uncertain whether eeMedia or Nesound (or both) will be filming the drama.

Zhao Baogang Ditches Youth in New Drama

163_10098_478940

Women (and not girls) rule over their male counterparts in this drama

Director Zhao Baogang came out with massive hit Struggle  in 2007, and returned in 2009 with another hit My Youthfulness that had the same sharp enjoyable dialogue. We were  thus anticipating his follow up, supposedly entitled Beijing Youth, in this trilogy of dramas portraying the lives of young Chinese.  But  instead he’s next tackling next Hun Yin Bao Wei Zhan, which deals with the lives of three married women and their different struggles with their increasing power in the workplace, and how they balance their homelife with it. We’re disappointed, but the plot of this drama is interesting enough to interest to see where he goes with it.

HuaYi will Release Three Hour Version of "The Message" if Box Office Does Well

Huang Xiaoming's scene where he inspects Li Bingbing's body has nearly a full-movie's amount of shot footage.

What a bribe. Film company Hua Yi has said that they will release a 3 hour version of The Message on DVD if the box office exceeds 300 million yuan (this was what Hua Yi’s previous blockbuster If You Are the One got easily). I hope this means some of the more graphic  scenes like the one that took place between Huang Xiaoming and Li Bingbing (above) would be unedited. Usually I’m not one for torture and blood and that sort of movie, but I really want to see this particular one  it in its gory glory. The running length in theaters was 122 min, which audiences have said was too short.

Sodagreen's Qingfeng Composes for Laure Shang

I’m disappointed how precipitously Sodagreen’s album dropped on Taiwan’s G-Billboard charts. From 1 to 7…I don’t get it. Anyway, Sodagreen’s Qingfeng has been composing all over the Greater China region apparently. First for Taiwanese artists, then recently for Eason Chan, and most recently, and surprisingly for mainland’s Laure Shang, who is right now Hua Yi’s top female artist (after Jane left). This is the first time I’ve actually heard of a famous Taiwanese artist composing for a mainland singer so that’s  pretty awesome.

I didn’t really like the sound quality of the video; to listen to a HQ version go here (you have to copy and paste):

Laure’s voice sounds so so much better there.

Ugly Wudi Season 3 Ends With a Huge Dance Finale

September 24, 2009 | Posted in Mainland China,Television, Tagged , ,

As you may have read about on this site, Ugly Wudi Season 3 was a musical. Last night it ended with a really large dance finale. What can I say? For me, this show can do no wrong. I love the chemistry of the cast, love how well the script was adapted to Chinese audiences, and finally I love how it does this kind of wacky crazy stuff.

The New Water Margin and Journey to the West Series casted

423213379036105079475033

This picture made me laugh. It's okay Yan Kuan. You don't need to bulk up for your role in Water Margin as long as you ditch the facial hair.

Warning: Lots of Fangirling ahead because I couldn’t manage to write this without spazzing.

China’s really hitting the four classics this year. Two Journey to the Wests, two Dream of the Red Chambers, Romance of the Three Kingdoms and now even Water Margin has been pushed into production. But China’s drama industry rose pretty quickly in technique and visuals, so in that regard remakes are almost looked to. And apart from the cheap version of Journey of the West, I love the casts quite a lot so I’m happy. Two pretty Jia Baoyus, a hot Zhu Geliang, a hot Tang Shen, and now a shuai, hot, shuai dai le Yan Qing. Do I sound shallow enough yet? I hope so. The amount of eye-candy’s too great for one girl to handle. Share my enthusiasm!

Yu Xiaowei getting ambushed with questions about Gao YuanYuan

This was from maybe two weeks ago actually… I just haven’t had time to post it until now. While most news portals’ main attraction at this event was Yu Xiaowei ‘s appearance so they could ask him questions about his relationship with Gao Yuanyuan (which has received even more interest now after Xia Yu and Yuan Quan’s marriage), I just wanted to celebrate HOTSPOT, because despite it only having existed for two years and it only being a biweekly magazine, I’ve already grown to love it in contrast to Vogue or Elle in China.

Xue Zhiqian Comes Back With New Hair and a New Song

His first new song after his third album release over a year ago is finally here! This comeback was a bit shocking, because I have never  seen him with black hair.  I think even in his baby pictures it’s a dark or light brown, certainly never this black. And the style is now different from the usually slightly spikey hair he had that I loved. Overall… kinda emo but I guess it’s time for a change after three albums. And how after so many albums is he still  so underrated? Where’s the Xue Zhiqian love? He’s cute, he composes beautiful ballads, he sings well live, and he even dances! What’s not to love?
