Johnny’s and Hunan TV to form new Chinese-Japanese boyband

What do you get when you cross Top Combine and NEWS?

Ever wonder what you'll get when you cross Top Combine and NEWS?

Tired of Top Combine’s MV’s where the Korean director decides to reuse his own work – DBSK’s Purple Line and O?
Tired of Meteor Shower second lead Yu Haoming being given typical kpop makeovers that overshadows his own sweetness?
So is their company. After years of working with Korean record label DoReMi,  Hunan Broadcasting Systems (which owns both Hunan TV and eeMedia, which manages Top Combine and Yu Haoming), has found a new foreign partner.

Today, Hunan TV’s Tian Tian Xiang Shang (天天向上) variety show announced the beginning of “Road to Asia, Day Day Up,” where Hunan TV (Huan Zhu Ge Ge, Super Girls & Boys, Meteor Shower, Happy Camp, Day Day Up)  will collaborate with Japanese entertainment company Johnny’s (Arashi, NEWS, KAT-TUN, Hey! Say! JUMP) to form a new boyband.

The competition welcomes all Chinese and Japanese males between the age of 12-26 to join, and the finals will air on Tian Tian Xiang Shang. Winners will receive a chance to join both Johnny’s and Hunan TV. They will train with Johnny’s to form a new boyband and  join Hunan TV as hosts for a new program.

Sign-ups begin on the 19th on QQ entertainment, and tomorrow’s episode of Tian Tian Xiang Shang will feature Johnny’s dance teachers, crew, and trainees(? – 街球少年).

    I’m really excited for this. Johnny’s is so much better than DoReMi… and Japan has a much more mature music industry. GBS can learn a lot from working with them.
    GBS is really reaching everywhere for collaborations. ^.^
    If only Johnny’s had came before Super Girls…

    AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! …. breath … AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! OMG OMG OMG! …. AHHHHHHHH!

    So are they going to do competition in Japan and in China? But they have to sign with both companies? isn’t that complicated? Or will they be like DBSK (SM + AVEX) working with Johnny in Japan and eeMedia in China?

    *international relation self* Maybe this’ll help Chinese-Japanese relation …

  3. idarklight says:

    This is especially fascinating because China and Japan have had so little pop music exchanges. I hope it’ll improve (and not intensify) the relationships, too…though I don’t think a complete friendship is ever possible, and especially if Japan denies so much atrocities during the Sino-Japanese wars.

    I hope it’ll be the latter. The TTXS announcement said that they would sign with Johnny’s, but work for TTXS (or a new program that TTXS’s production team is introducing)… I do hope GBS maintain a degree of control and ownership of the group so that they can earn the money can have a say in what happens with the group.

    Since the sign-up website hasn’t been set up yet, I don’t know how auditions will work. But it’ll be up tomorrow, which hopefully means more explanation.

    OK < look it's a person laying down…

    Anyway, now that I've calmed down a little.

    I agree Johnny is a much better company than DoReMi, I wish they came before Top Combine (or maybe not since Xiao Wu is from DRM). And idarklight don't forget Johnny only train and package Boy Bands, they don't do Girl Groups. (I think Kpop girl groups are packaged better then Japanese)

    But I'm worried about the politics, would the Chinese public accept Japanese "imports" so easily? I don't know much about Japanese Idol groups in China, (not counting DBSK + Arashi) are there any boy band that the Chinese public really like? If they do have Japanese members, would they be as use to Chinese culture and expectation? Would the music be a Japanese music with Chinese music that doesn't match? I don't want these new talents (&eye candies) to be picked and not succeed, or to be picked and packaged just to fulfill the partnership. Does this mean that Johnny is looking to expand into China as well?

    As much as I am spazzing over this news, I'm still waiting for the day Chinese entertainment companies can stand on their own.

  5. idarklight says:

    Right…I did forget that. XD

    Japan has much better vocal/dancing training, though.

    HaoEr (TTXS host) is also Japanese, and he’s very much loved. So I think given the fact that it’s a mixed group, it shouldn’t be hard to accept them….although it depends on the ratio…I’m still worried that if they replace Liu Meihan, the Super Girls group could be more Korean than Chinese, which will be harder to sell.

    Everyone wants a piece of the China cake. Hey! Maybe we could use opium and China as an analogy to kpop and Chinese music? Very addictive, money-taking, and makes much of the Chinese fangirl population dependent on a foreign country. Meanwhile, the older Chinese does not want to change. Like Lin Zexu, some think if they block it, it’ll be okay. Others believe in the inherent superiority of Chinese music (analogous to the old Confucian school). Other believe a need to keep the soul of cpop, but change its business practices (analogous to the self-strengthening method of increasing military technique and training). And finally, some just believe that we should just turn completely kpop, both businesswise and musicwise. What will happen to the Chinese music industry? Will it go the most radical route like China itself? Or will it find a way to balance its interests?

    Sorry…I really need sleep.

  6. chikimonki says:

    I like Japanese vocal training (look what they did with DBSK, completely transformed and repackaging them into a ballad group for the Japanese market). But dancing? .. Maybe it’s because I’m too into kpop, but to me jpop dance steps had always been to soft and marshmallow to watch. But that’s ok because it’s the vocal that would help them establish a solid fan base. With enough look they can gain fans and use their vocal to keep the fans.

    JIA YOU CJB (Chinese Johnny Boys)!

    AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WHAT???????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    This is the first time I’ve posted on the new blog; the news is just too shocking to not comment on.

    I’m kind of interested and scared of what will come out of this. Mainly due to political conflicts of these two countries, but also other whatnots.

  8. curious says:

    YES! finally another partner. it’s about time, after all the mv screw ups Top Combine and lack of polish training DoRiMi provided, Hunan TV finally found a more powerful partner (although Jap is kinda of a touchy subject)…

    is Johnny’s trying to move into the Chinese market? like it’s female counterpart Hello! project did by including 2 chinese member (btw, how is that working out? is Morning Musume successful in China?)

  9. yelei says:

    I haven’t post on any blog entries since it moved. D:

    anyways, this is GOD DAMN AWESOME! XD
    do you think most people prefer jpop OVER jpop? i mean fashion-wise, china is heavily influence by japan, but then music and fashion are two completely different thing D: this will be interesting.

    the only thing that’s bothering me is the age range 12-26… hmmm, if the age is 17-26 i understand but damn.. 12?! O_____O 12 vs. 22… 10 years of difference.

  10. yelei says:

    hunantv needs to DROP their partnership with DoReMi -________-

  11. JJ says:

    I never thought Johnny’s will get caught up in the China wave but apparently I am wrong…………….. this will either be super amazing or end up a disaster. I am secretly hoping it’ll be amazing…

  12. uhm says:

    Is johnny’s entertainment really something to be proud about?

    Is there one singer in JE who can actually sing?

    I know the jpop industry is a lot better, but are the idol groups any better than those of kpop or cpop?

  13. e says:

    So like, how credible is this? I mean, totally. China is an awesome market, but this method of boyband making… is a little but too unconventional for Johnny’s imo.

  14. J_J says:

    Interesting partnership… ….

    Also, I know Hunan TV is a major network in China, but it’s a music company as well? How does that work?

  15. taropi says:

    omg serious….can they invite pi on TTXS will be a dream come true to see haoming and pi on the same show xD lol just wishing…and wow can’t beleive johnny actually collaborating with hunan ….

  16. taropi says:

    yelei – yeah it’s a big difference but i think most likely johnnys set that rule lol 12, it’s so common in johnnys…

  17. uhm says:

    @taorpi

    really? When i think of johnnys i think of a lot of head singing, and similar voices to one another

  18. v4ever says:

    Certainly there are many in China who dislike Japan, but there are definitely many who hate Korea a lot more than Japan. The sentiment is definitely getting stronger because of various incidents. I kind of think one of the reasons that Hunan stopped collaborating with the Koreans might be the public sentiments. I don’t think it would be that hard for people to accept Japanese stars. I love Johnny’s, but to be honest, their groups aren’t as talented in singing & dancing as some of the Korean ones. Johnny’s focus more on the looks and personalities. I kind of wonder what kind of people they are going to choose (since most of Johnny’s boys start out as little kids). I’m definitely looking forward to seeing the eye candies.

    @v4ever/uhm
    I think it’s important to compare not korea with japan, but Johnny’s with DoReMi. I wouldn’t have minded if TC/YHM had been given MV/songs like SJ/DBSK/Rain, etc…but they haven’t. DoReMi has not given Top Combine/Yu Haoming any good MV’s or good songs. Lu Hu’s song had really good composing but terrible arrangement by DoReMi that ruined the whole song.

    Johnny’s quality of production is so much superior to that of DoReMi.

    @v4ever
    Hunan is still collaborating with Korean companies. Hunan TV just had Zhang Liyin on one of their shows, and SHINEE at the beginning of the year. And eeMedia still has the girlgroup training in Korea.

    @uhm
    Is it necessary for boybands to be able to sing? People don’t listen to boybands for their vocals. There are far better vocals to listen to elsewhere. Boybands are for thoughtless, addictive fangirling.

  21. linny says:

    Wow this partnership can open so many doors… Interested to where this may end up ( hopefully it’ll be good)

    so is eeMedia ending things with DoReMi or is eeMedia just adding Johnny’s to the partners list? ( hope it’s the first)

  22. idarklight says:

    @linny
    Neither
    eeMedia, as far as I can tell, isn’t involved in this.

  23. [...] Johnny’s Entertainment is seemingly working in collaboration with a Chinese entertainment agency to form a Chinese-Japanese boyband. Hunan TV has contacted JE and decided to hold a televised competition welcoming all Japanese and Chinese boys and men, ages 12-26, where the winners will form the new boyband and join Hunan TV as hosts for a new TV program. Source [...]

  24. Linny says:

    I’m just wondering but won’t it be the same as the Korean company? because sooner or later they are going to get tired of the Japanese like they did with the koreans right? Idk I’m just putting it out there. I don’t think one is better than the other, it’s just that each group, Japanese, Korean an Chinese all have a different music style so maybe with us joining with the Japanese we can reach an even greater audience. Idont’ know… Either way we are the ones benefitting, unless the new band turns out to be a disappointment. =x

  25. idarklight says:

    @Linny
    They didn’t get rid of DoReMi. Plus, DoReMi is collaborating with eemedia, which I don’t think Johnny’s is doing.

    Also…I’m not talking about all k-companies..but compare the quality of music/videos/packaging by DoReMi and Johnny’s, and there is an obvious difference. DoReMi is like this no-named, low-ranked company that even Koreans haven’t heard of, and Johnny’s is a lot more prominent and, to quote cfensi, “the granddaddy of Asian boybands.”

  26. Benji says:

    I’m guessing the minimum age is so low because Johnny has his “thing” for young boys… – _ -

    Not sure how effective training will be, though…I mean…how many Johnny’s guys can actually sing or dance competently? u _ u

  27. bumbleberri says:

    OMG WHoa. This collab is kind of…new. But so exciting! Haha, I mean, I love japanese boybands like NewS and it this can get people more interested in Chinese bands, then that’s a totally awesome idea! Definitely go for it, but I just hope people won’t bring the past Japan-China relationship up and cause controversy -.-

  28. shoups says:

    hope for asia domination hahaha i am evil

  29. Linny says:

    I never said they got rid of DoReMi though=x

  30. abbie says:

    Holy sh*t….this is big. I thought Johnny has been eyeing the Chinese market ever since Arashi held a learning Chinese special tv series a few years ago pre-Beijing Olymics and said they’d be releasing a full Chinese album…of course I’m not sure if it ever happened…but he’s definately been thinking about it.

    Johnny’s don’t really appeal to be music/dance wise, but they sure know how to package.

  31. idarklight says:

    btw.
    It’s not like DoReMi has great vocals…

  32. mrpeng says:

    i think this also has something to do with politics. japans new president/prime minister hakoyama is very pro china-japan rellations. his grandfather, and father all wanted to biuld long lasting ties with china. and if anyone has noticed, USA, is currently bashing and being biased toward this new japanese administration.
