Chinese Entertainment in English news round-up

Guo Jingming's new fantasy series

Described as "a Japanese Anime," "the Golden Compass" and the"Lord of the Rings," Guo Jingming's "Mark of the Cavalier" is criticized for its lack of "Chineseness"

Some English articles on Chinese entertainment news written in ways that I can only wish I could:

The articles include a fascinationg discussion on Guo Jingming’s new fantasy novel and its debut in literary typhoon Ba Jin’s Harvest, a CNN interview with Huayi CEO Wang Zhongjun and actor Daniel Wu, critiques on Fan Bingbing’s fashion at Cannes and translations of Han Han’s blog posts.

A fantasy novel in a serious literary magazine: Guo Jingming in Harvest

Guo Jingming (郭敬明), the magazine editor and writer of phenomenally-popular YA fiction, has a novel coming out in the summer supplement to Harvest (收获), one of China’s most respected literary magazines.
In Harvest’s case, readers who see the magazine as a bastion of serious literature have accused it of betraying its standards to take advantage of Guo’s popularity. Making matters worse is the subject matter of Guo’s new book: Mark of the Cavalier (爵迹) is the first volume of a new epic fantasy series. Is Harvest repositioning itself to compete with the pulps?

Fan Bingbing: Just trying to do her best, not to be an empress

Fan Bingbing at Cannes Festival. Four of her many outfits during the festival are below the cut.

Since the 7th Century, only the emperors of China could wear a longpao, a yellow robe stitched with dragons, symbolic of power and prosperity. So it was that conspires of coups forged their own dragon robes at home, only to be found and sentenced to death. So when Fan Bingbing appeared at the Cannes Festival in a dress fashioned after the dragon robes of the emperors, critics compared her with the emperor-wannabes, calling her move a sign of ambition. In an interview with Sina Entertainment (SE) translated by ixiedin@cfensi, Fan Bingbing says it is only her way of showing the world her culture. She also speaks of her ambitions, and attributes to her overfilled work schedule to her just trying to do her best.

SE: You wore something similar when you signed into Bona Yinglong, do you tend to favor this style of clothing?
FBB: I felt that since this is an international stage, I need to show that I’m from China, not Korea or Japan. Some French had once thought I was from other Asian countries, but with this dress I can express my origin without having to personally explain this to them, so this feeling of nationalism is very important to me.

SE: But in the Chinese mindset, dragons are for males and phoenixes are for females.
FBB: Foreigners think of Chinese girls as gentle and soft beauties, I want to give them a new perspective. Chinese girls can also be powerful, not just sweet or cute. I want to give them something different.

SE: What do you say to Qin Hailu’s microblog on Sina, “[FBB's] so blunt as to wear her ambition in public.” ?
FBB: If she really thinks that’s ambition, then it’s hers, not mine. Fan Bingbing is only a simple person who hopes to show her culture through her dress. (more…)

China’s first “Green” channel part of vision for Chinese media empires

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Don't look at Zhou Xun, Look at Qinghai TV - Actress Zhou Xun is the green spokesperson for the new Qinghai TV.

Every Asian drama needs a Cinderella-like makeover, and it’s no different in the rest of the TV world. Today, our heroine is Qinghai Satellite TV, the  fairy godmother is Hunan Broadcasting Systems (GBS) , and the new wardrobe is green.

With its own owner GBS, Qinghai TV will start over on the 26th with a completely new set of programs, a new logo, and a new slogan -  “Beautify Qinghai, Greenify China,” making it the first Chinese station to embrace environmentalism in its aim.

“A green life brings us healthy bodies, and a green spirit brings us healthy souls. I hope that while “Our Part” and Qinghai TV works to promote green lifestyles, we can also bring green into people’s lives,” said actress Zhou Xun, Qinghai TV’s green spokesperson.

The channel’s purchase by GBS in January is also part of GBS’s ambition to form a large media powerhouse in China. By March, Qinghai TV, last year’s second least viewed Chinese satellite channel,  expanded viewership by 174% from last December.

Stills From Jet Li’s New Movie “Ocean Heaven”

After taking a break from movies in May 2008, Jet Li returns to the Chinese film market with his new movie Ocean Heaven (Hai Yang Tian Tang), expected to open at the end of June. The movie tells the story of an autistic twenty-two-year-old named Wang Dafu. Jet Li plays the boy’s terminally ill father, who works in an aquarium and takes care of his son day and night. The boy’s mother died several years ago from drowning, but Dafu himself is quit adept in the water.

In the trailer, father and son are sitting on a dilapidated wooden boat. The father, Wang Xincheng, uses a rope to tie him and his son together, and then says, “Son, let’s go.” Dafu repeats, “Let’s go,” and the two jump together into the ocean.

For an actor who could have easily demanded more than a hundred million yuan to appear in a film, what could have caused Jet Li to accept a role in Ocean Heaven, which had a budget of a mere seven million? The story, for one thing — Jet Li hopes it will inspire people to pay more attention and dedicate their compassion to charity. (Appropriately, TIME magazine named Jet Li one of its Most Influential People this year for his work with his One Foundation.) He also reveals that four or five years ago, his nephew had been diagnosed with autism. His nephew is now better, but this incident made him realize how important it is to offer attention and care to those who are affected.

New Hunan company headed by hostess Li Xiang to film “Autumn in My Heart” and drama starring Jimmy Lin

Smart, funny, and pretty

Li Xiang joins Long Danni as a Hunan Broadcasting CEO.

At Hunan TV, females rules. Not only are all of its major stars female – from Vicki Zhao of Huan Zhu Ge Ge and  Li Xiang of Happy Camp to the Super Girls  – it’s leadership, too, has been increasingly female. Host-turned-CEO Li Xiang (李湘) will tip the balance a little more as she take control of the third Hunan Broadcasting Systems seed company managed by a woman.

Mango Films (芒果影业), the company Li Xiang will head, has already announced a remake of Autumn in My Heart, the film “The Formation of the Party,” and is currently filming drama “Single Princess Seeking a Prince (单身公主相亲记)” starring Zhao Liang, Jimmy Lin and Dylan Kuo. Mango Films also signed film management contracts with fellow Hunan TV hosts Yang Lele (杨乐乐), Sun Xiaoxiao (孙骁骁) and Zhao Liang (赵靓). (more…)

Back to Live – Best of MTV True Live

SuperVC and Laure Shang on MTV True Live

In a world where music can be produced with computers, and singing often means lipsynching, there’s something precious about live music – especially on TV. MTV True Live is a series that I’ve really enjoyed. It has the perfect atmosphere for live music (not that it’s really live since we’re not there) – enough audiences for artists to get excited in, but not concert-like, so the artists can really feel comfortable and interact with the music and band.

Artists who have gone on include Yoga Lin & Jeno (Jade) Liu, Kay Tse & Chen Chusheng, Jane Zhang & Zhang Yadong, Zhang Jie & Tan Weiwei, Laure Shang & Super VC and Shin & Li Yuchun. Some highlights from each show, including Jane Zhang’s beautiful cover of Sting’s Fragile, cute duets between Yoga Lin and Jeno Liu, and a powerful duet by Tan Weiwei and Zhang Jie. Laure Shang and SuperVC’s episode is not on YouTube, but you can watch it on tudou here.
Extra points for figuring out what  all of the pairs have in common other than the boy-girl pairings!
