Although eeMedia boyband 8090 has yet to debut, its members are already delving into other areas. The group’s most popular member, Jiang Chao, has revealed on his blog that he will be auditioning for Hunan TV and eeMedia’s new remake of “You’re Beautiful,” a Korean drama about a girl who accidentally became member of a popular boyband. Given their history, Hunan TV will probably only take from the general idea and change the plot significantly (generally for the better).
It is uncertain other member of 8090 will try out with him on the 12th, but this would be an interesting way for them to debut on the silver screen again. Listen to them cover Meteor Rain here.

I would love to see him in a drama, but the phrase “korean remake” worries me :l
Why remake something though?? There has been so many remakes lately. Wish they would create a new drama entirely. Oh well, it would be nice to see him in a drama. Eye candy.
This actually really fits Hunan’s eeMedia dramas, and they need a new drama with eeMedia people. Hunan’s nesound dramas just keep using Zhang Jiani over and over. Why can’t they get new people. :/
Plus, 3 roles for hotties (which is I guess why eeMedia zoned into this one). I think Jang Geun Suk is a great actor, and his role needed someone who is a good actor because the character is harder to like immediately, convey sympathy for. The second lead actor can be whomever, experienced actor or not because the role is loveable and doesn’t require any acting skill. But Jiang Chao’s image really fits the male lead.
I hope they will change the female lead however, to something more similar to all the kick-ass Chinese female leads. I didn’t watch this, but I heard the lead was very stupid and it’s what dragged the drama towards the end.
IDGAF about the remaking. Both Korea and Taiwan are making their fair share of adaptations. Let’s not be hypocritical.
I watched three episodes of the it, but didn’t really like it because of the styling, plot, and non-lovable leads.
I wrote this in the chatbox, but this is one of the few Korean dramas I’ve been wanting them to remake … I think the general idea is a really good fit for Hunan TV and eemedia.
I think the best way for eeMedia to go about this would be to take the general idea of girl in male boyband and run with it in their own direction, which they generally do a good job of. The characters and styling definitely need to change, and the nuns should definitely be scratched (although … it would be cool for her to come from a Buddhist nunnery and be a martial arts master). It would be pretty cool if they plug the entire 8090 into the show and expand the boyband, or have some of the members as other roles.
And Jiang Chao really, really fits the male lead image-wise. Hopefully he learned acting from his cousin or something. (or, his cousin can try out XD)
Also … musical … they should make this a musical. And then have the drama be about them training as well as after debut.
“it would be cool for her to come from a Buddhist nunnery and be a martial arts master”
yes yes yes! it would be such a cool way to deal with the problems of the original, the weak female lead.
why does Hunan never have original ideas?
Tracy, Hunan does. It has lots of original dramas. And it has a bank of Guo Jingming stories to choose from actually if it wanted to, since Guo Jingming now works for them. But the eeMedia drama department is new. This is only its second drama, and perhaps they feel comfortable seeing which dramas they can adapt to use as vehicles for their stars. This one has already proven it works for giving musical artists fame.
^^ doing remakes that were successful sells I suppose. Like how Korea latched onto the Boys over flowers series and now they’re redoing It Started With a Kiss. And yeah, they do have original ideas.
I support this remake! Usually I hate having them remake Korean stuff instead of just thinking up something themselves, but I think this is a good choice for a remake. I watched about half of the drama, and thought it fulfilled the dreams and desires of pretty much every fangirl around.
Indeed, Jiang Chao seems to fit the role pretty well, but idk how he’d juggle filming + practice + preparations for debut album all at once??
I hope Hunan TV adds a twist to it to make it a bit different. I like the idea of the girl being from the Buddhist nunnery and having martial arts skill.
I actually can’t wait to see this either. Jiang Chao would make a good lead and i hope he can act xD i actually can’t wait for 8090 to debut xD
‘You’re Beautiful’ is such a cute drama! Its just another typical idol drama plot but the cast and scenarios were so enjoyable to watch!! Jang Geun Suk was abit abit stuck up at the beginning but he really grows on u
I agree Jiang Chao matches main guy character coz he’s got that bad boy look and feel that not alot of other young mainland actors have. It would be extra awesome if other 8090 members can be casted esp Chen Xiao and Xu Jia Wei but thats just my wishful thinking.
Can’t wait!
Wee! I’m actually a bit excited for this remake, even though I don’t think they’ll make it as good as the original You’re Beautiful, which was one of my favorite korean comedies (all of the leads were very adorable). I couldn’t get enough of You’re Beautiful even though it had 16 episodes, so this will be a perfect follow up!
Also, Jiang Chao was the only guy among 8090 band who I thought was cute:) So having him as lead would be a nice choice imo.
I was just thinking what a great idea this remake would be if it actually followed the lines of what some of the people here suggested. ie Buddist nunnery+martial arts combo. But if they actually followed the Korean verison with the girl I’ll be disappointed (unfortunately I could get past 3 episodes cos the girl was too squishy…i can’t stand squishy girls)
GOD. has anyone noticed how bad hunantv has become? i feel like it continuously rips off everything korean and gives chinese ppl a bad name
in addition why remake a really popular drama? why not just write one yourselves? aghhh
@bomobom
Hunan TV doesn’t do that. Of all the dramas Hunan TV has aired and produced this year, only one has been a remake, and a Japanese one at that. The other four have all been original dramas, including The Secret History of Yang Guifei, Entertainment without a circle (starring Han Xue), Lan Se Jia Meng (starring Chen Qiaoen) and Si Si Xin Dong. It also co-produced Charlene and Mike He’s “Calling Big Star,” which it should air soon. Just because you’re only interested in anything that Hunan TV does that’s Korean doesn’t mean it’s the only thing Hunan TV does.
Of the TV series Hunan TV’s currently producing, two are Korean remakes, one is Hunan TV remaking its own drama, and three are original dramas.
As for why remakes … the two companies that are doing most of the remakes are both new drama companies who really would rather play it safe. Remakes have an insured audience and media attention, so it’s good for bring up new crops of artists that it can then use to support a completely new drama. Both of the companies are, however, working toward bigger, original projects. eeMedia, which did Meteor Shower, is slowly going toward the Tiny Times adaptation, a bestselling book in China and will be the Gossip Girl of China when it’s made into a series. Mango Films, the one doing Autumn in my heart, also invested in several new productions based on Chinese books.
I think there’s nothing wrong with remakes as long as they try to produce original dramas at the same time. But then again, how original can we all get? Nothing’s original anymore. Plots are recycled over and over again.
Think about it, how original can you get? When was the last completely original story you watched?
I mean, look, star-crossed lovers, done, rich people falling in love with poor people, done, rags-to-riches, done, falling in love with your brother, half-brother, stepbrother, done. Falling in love with the enemy, done. Girl dressing up as a boy, done. It’s all been done before. Falling in love with a supernatural creature. Done. Everything’s been done before. It’s just old content being repackaged.
Remakes are fine as long as they do a good job at it.
