PM us at youtube if you want to contact us until we figure out some better way of contacting us.

CFensi was a site started mainly to help me with my Chinese, that evolved into a general news blog on Chinese entertainment, perhaps the only new blog focused on Chinese entertainment, and I’m almost certain it’s the only one that chronicles the  rapid changes in mainland Chinese entertainment.

idarklight was dragged into helping me run thus site sometime late in 2008 after months of spazzing and discussing certain Chinese artists we liked by pming back and forth with each other, wherein I found in her the same love and analytical nature for the potential and future of Chinese entertainment. She is also the more knowledgeable, more eloquent and better at Chinese of the two of us. Ever since she joined, not only has the quality of the articles written on this site gone up tons,  but the tag size for Wei Chen (a guy with a massive love for music…something quite endearing to idarklight) grew like, 3-fold, which is great, because he’s quite nice to look at too, besides being talented.

Both of us try to never give inaccurate information. I dislike rumors and gossip in general. This site is a hobby that sometimes feels like work, but work I don’t get paid for. So unlike tabloids, or sites who generate profit with false news, it’s more or less just a waste of time for me to talk about things that may never come to pass. I am a sucker for anything inspirational or moving however so you may get a daily dose of saccharine from here if you’re not careful.

Disclaimer : As you may have noticed I focus on mainland Chinese articles more for a myriad of reasons. It interests me more because it’s changing at a very rapid pace and the second more important reason is because not much is found on it. I don’t really have all the time in the world, so when I see an article about Taiwanese, or Hong Kong stars (and it seems like every little thing they do or think is translated) and posted (usually at Asianfanatics.net) then I really have no desire to do the same if more people visit that site and they can translate better than me. The third reason is simply I  only can read mainland Chinese news sites like Sina or Sohu, with simplified characters. These tend to favor mainland as well. But I still would really like to even up the ratio of mainland/Taiwan/HK news so if anyone would like to help me on that area I would love to have you on board.

Oh, and we’re both extremely biased to the province of Sichuan in China for providing us with all the really good singers. Neither one of us is from there though.

does this site hate korean stuff? it seems like its always being criticized in the comments

I think this site has congregated a group of people who are antagonistic to certain parts of Korean culture, because Korean and Chinese entertainment are both growing and more interdependent than a lot of other cultures in Asia. Thus, you see a lot of the ways Korea affects Cpop, Cmovies etc. And it’s not that positive of an influence.

For my part, I really, really dislike the way Korean companies are treating China like a cash cow, when China is in the midst of developing its own music. It’s very damaging to Chinese entertainment, and I dislike the trends in Korean music entertainment so I hope China doesn’t get affected and go in the same direction. And I am a bit annoyed, because since I’d rather Chinese money go towards developing Chinese music, I actually am rooting for packaged idol groups when I really don’t like them. Kpop has made that crap necessary just so China’s market share doesn’t get lost.

But I don’t really think anyone hates Korean stuff in general. I like some Korean music, but more of the old stuff like H.O.T and Moon Heejun’s current stuff. I like some of the catchy stuff in Kpop, but I really don’t like most K-ballads or K-indie (I’ve yet to care for anyone under Pastel) . But I do try it if someone recommends it.

Her English name may not be Google-friendly, but “董燕妮” will get better results.

You have a great blog, I’ve found a lot of news about korean and japanese entertainment but yours it’s truly about chinese.

    Thanks for your good info.

I like this blog… I’m interested in Chinese entertainment too but am too lazy to go read Chinese websites (which are sometimes inaccurate and require reading Chinese chars) and I look for general coverage instead of information on specific artists, so this blog’s awesome for my desires.

  12. smith says:

hey i was wondering how much you actually know about kpop? Cause it seems you have had knowledge of it for a long time and i are still following it?

  13. cfensi says:

I know quite a bit – I think Kpop’s pretty fascinating and easy to follow because like Chinese entertainment, it’s developing. It hasn’t settled down. There’s a rawness and progression there that you don’t see with Japanese and American music.

So the industry like the Chinese music industry is interesting because it’s evolving. There’s plenty of potential there, potential that I was captivated by back in mid-2000sish. But I’ve been disappointed with the direction it turned in the past five years or so I don’t follow it so much.

Now I kind it follow it because the Kpop companies really go after the Chinese market so it’s impossible to avoid, and I like to catch up on some singers that I liked before.

  14. smith says:

Oh okay.. just wanted to make sure cause some people look at it and make assumptions…like thinking its always been run by idol groups and that it only has pop/hiphop

they dont realize that just two years ago singing groups like sgwanabe won main prizes and how groups like leessang are still successful

I’ve been lurking this site for quite a while now, so this post is extremely overdue (which is why it’s so long). I just want to thank you guys for this site. I am Chinese, born in China but spent my whole life in the USA and Canada. To this day, when someone asks “Where are you from?”, I instinctively say “China”– despite the fact that I’ve spent 1/17 years there. I’ve always been proud of being Chinese but, at times, it seems that no one else shares this pride and that my feelings of patriotism are something that I have to stifle. Looking around as a kid, the only source of information I had on China and its culture was the Western media; articles from places like Time Magazine completely skewed my perception of the nation I had always been so eager to call home. It almost seems like there’s anti-Chinese propaganda EVERYWHERE (particularly concerning Tibet and pre-Olympics); “news”, internet, people around me. It hurts and angers me that some people can be so ignorant. And that’s why I love this site so much. I feel it is very informative and appreciate the deep and knowledgable discussions that take place (RE: Idol Girls, Meteor Shower). I think what sets you guys apart from other music/entertainment blogs (and what I like the most) is that there is thought and truth behind your posts– it’s not just mindless bashing of culture you don’t understand (as at allkpop etc.)

I didn’t really mean to tell you my life story but I really do want to convey my feelings of appreciation for and [silent] belonging to the entire Cfensi community. While I don’t usually have time to respond to postings, I almost always read them. Thank you so much and keep up the fantastic work!
