Laure Shang met with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper this month in Canada

In addition to performing in California and Montreal and meeting with musicians in New York, multilingual singer  Laure Shang Wenjie also met with the Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Hunter and Nevada governor Lorraine Hunter as a part of her trip to North America this month.  I love Laure Shang to bits, but I have no idea what she would say to him and vice-versa.  I hope Hu Jintao gets a photo op with Lady Gaga soon. Or at least Adam Lambert, if we go the pop idol route.

Edit: Apparently, she has also been greeted by Tony Blair’s wife, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, and the Belize Royal Family in the past year… Did she go back to being a translator or something?

Hu Ge teaches in rural village, sponsors child to go to school

Hu Ge

If we have extra wealth, I think it's only right that we provide these children with better conditions.- Hu Ge

Although he often portrays world-saving heroes on TV, Hu Ge shows his down-to-earth sweetness on a recent episode of “By Your Side” as he shows the audience that you don’t need super powers to be a hero. From thousands of applicants asking him to spend a day with him, Hu Ge picked Su Chao, a city girl who decided to go teach in rural regions of Hunan.

In the show, Hu Ge first surprised the children with backpacks filled with school supplies. When he learned that because of how far the children have to travel to go home, none of them eat lunch, he also decided to forgo lunch to play with the children, even building them a basketball hoop. After school ended, he went with the teacher to convince a girl who had dropped out because her family couldn’t afford school, promising the girl that he will support her all the way to college.

“The flag is at your East, and the East is where the sun rises, and the East is also where you will walk out of this village. I hope you can study well with Teacher Su. With knowledge, when you grow up, you can leave this village to fulfill your dreams, and when you have the ability, you can come back and change your village’s life,” Hu Ge told the students during the flag-rising event in the morning.

Hu Ge had previously donated all profits of his last book to build a Hope School for children in rural regions. Upon finishing filming, the production team contacted the Hunan Youth Funds to build a new school for the children. You can watch the episode on Tudou here.

Following Rain last year, singer Zhang Jie was named the Best Asian Artist by Korea’s Mnet Asian Music Awards.  His performance at the awards  wow’ed many audiences, and searches for his name rose quickly on Korean search engine Naver. Despite MAMA not being more Korean than Asian, the award is a nice nod to the singer, whose well earned widespread popularity in mainland has yet to spread internationally. In addition to just finishing a concert, Zhang Jie recently released his  latest, much anticipated album, “It’s Love/这,就是爱.” You can download it on Maypay here, and after you realize how pretty it is, but it from Yesasia here. His  juniors in eeMedia,  his shimei, the multinational girlband iMe, who debuted this past summer with Aiiya was also named the best new artist,  encouraging their growth as artists.

Despite being busy with his  concert preparation, promoting his new album, and attending events like MAMA, he still managed to make time for the most important things to him, his friends.  He went to Shanghai  before heading to the Zhuhai/Macau area for MAMA, to visit his friend and shidi Yu Haoming at Ruijin Hospital waiting at the acute care center for a very long time. However, he wasn’t allowed to go into Yu Haoming’s room, and staff could only pass on his hopes for Yu Haoming to get better.

Everyone’s favorite Panda Ambassador Huang Xiaoming spent the day with his panda children, Ping Ping and An An, in order to celebrate their second birthday. He arrived early this morning at the Shanghai Wildlife Zoo, bringing with him an enormous birthday cake made of carrots and apples, and personally fed his son and daughter. He also posted some adorable panda-related photos on his weibo (Sina Twitter). So much cuteness to be had — it’s a shame birthdays only come once a year.

On a slightly related note, this is incredibly late, but Huang Xiaoming released an MV for his song Reunion (团团圆圆) almost two months ago. This was back when people were starting to speculate his relationship with Angelababy, but everyone knows pandas are more important than relationship rumors. Okay, maybe that’s just me. Anyhow, I’m kind of disappointed that I didn’t find out this MV existed until yesterday, but it’s so cute it just washes away all my disappointment. It actually doesn’t contain any new footage, apart from the parts where he’s singing, but it has pandas and that’s all that matters:

During the opening ceremony of an environmental protection exhibit at the Shanghai Expo, actress Li Bingbing was formally appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), making her the first celebrity in Asia and fifth celebrity worldwide to receive such a distinction.

When asked why Li Bingbing was picked as a Goodwill Ambassador, UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner said, “We paid much attention to and thoroughly investigated Miss Li Bingbing’s contributions to environmental protection both in China and internationally. When we got in touch with her, we could really feel her passion for and persistence in pursuing environmental protection. Among all the Asian actors we have been in touch with, it can be said that she is the most systematic and most able to carry things out.”

Li Bingbing expressed her thanks to three different groups: “the two billion people who participated with me for Earth Hour — it is you who give me confidence and courage; the people who participated in the ‘Million Forest’ project — it is you who make the Earth a shade greener; the friends and teams who have supported me — it is you who gave me a reason to achieve greater dreams. I believe that in the future, there will be more people who will work together with us!”

Yann Arthus-Bertrand, director of the environmental film HOME, was also present at the event; when asked if he would be working with Asian actors, he looked at Li Bingbing and smiled, saying, “I’m very honored to have seen Miss Li Bingbing do so many things relevant to environmental protection. I plan to film another environmental movie in November and hope to invite Miss Li Bingbing to participate.”

According to reports, after the event Li Bingbing rushed to New York in order to record the dubbing for her part in the Hollywood movie Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. Her co-stars Hugh Jackman and Korean actress Jun Ji-hyun will also be doing their recording during this time. Li Bingbing will be in America for a month.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Don't look at Zhou Xun, Look at Qinghai TV - Actress Zhou Xun is the green spokesperson for the new Qinghai TV.

Every Asian drama needs a Cinderella-like makeover, and it’s no different in the rest of the TV world. Today, our heroine is Qinghai Satellite TV, the  fairy godmother is Hunan Broadcasting Systems (GBS) , and the new wardrobe is green.

With its own owner GBS, Qinghai TV will start over on the 26th with a completely new set of programs, a new logo, and a new slogan -  “Beautify Qinghai, Greenify China,” making it the first Chinese station to embrace environmentalism in its aim.

“A green life brings us healthy bodies, and a green spirit brings us healthy souls. I hope that while “Our Part” and Qinghai TV works to promote green lifestyles, we can also bring green into people’s lives,” said actress Zhou Xun, Qinghai TV’s green spokesperson.

The channel’s purchase by GBS in January is also part of GBS’s ambition to form a large media powerhouse in China. By March, Qinghai TV, last year’s second least viewed Chinese satellite channel,  expanded viewership by 174% from last December.

fc6159afc43951c8fbed50a8

A-list Chinese pop singers and musicians gathered at the National Olympic Center on Friday night for the annual Beijing Pop Music Awards gala, one of the most influential events that honors excellence in the industry. Pop veteran Wang Leehom dominated this year’s ceremony by notching four awards, while veteran rocker Wang Feng followed with three wins. Jane Zhang won Best Female Artist for the fourth time in a row, which brought her to tears rarely seen from the singer, especially as she thought of how she missed her mom and how as a busy aspiring artist, she had few opportunities to see her and talk to her. Returning veteran Han Hong beat out Chris Li Yuchun for most popular female artist. Song Zuying, the queen of folk, made a special surprise appearance.
