China Open Comes to a Close While The Game Gets a Boost From Entertainment

peng-1

Peng Shuai advanced to the Quarterfinals of the China Open. One of her old coaches was Michael Chang, whose tried to boost popularity for the game in China by guest-starring in Prince of Tennis Season 2.

Like a lot of other sports, tennis has risen in China quickly due to greater funding for it over the past years. This year, with $4.5 million  in prize money, the Beijing China Open is now for the first time a mandatory, top-level WTA Tour stop. But the sport is also getting boosts from entertainment stars who are helping to push it into the mainstream consciousness. The China Open is in its final rounds, and Jane Zhang  and Yang Kun recorded a song for it some time ago.

(This was before Universal started making her look  trashy…go back to Hua Yi Jane, not the  let’s-remake-songs company!)

Fusion Band

After being inactive for half a year, Fusion will be back with a second album. When asked why the long absence, their company said that they’ve been concentrating on their next album which is reaching the end stages of its production. Now they’ll be starting performances again to warm up for their new release.

This is probably the best music news in this batch, the rest are just sad ones about company matters.

Miss China Universe 2009, Miss World 2007, a Comparison, and a blog entry about Liu Xiang

Ok… because someone asked me who China’s entry into Miss Universe was:

840a0ea36a0a3085caefd081

Name: Wang Jingyao

Height: 182 cm

Measurements: 81/61/90

I don’t know anything else about her but this particular request reminded me  of another request, by another commenter to translate Miss World 2007, Zhang Zilin‘s blog entry in defense of Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang, which deeply impressed me when I read it; it was beautifully written.  Not to mention that she took her time to write an essay about the matter because she could help, and I think that’s the beauty of these “beauty pageants”, they find people who in general love helping others.

So I’ve put the translation below the cut, and I also talk about the difference between Miss World vs Miss Universe as it pertains to China.

I watched the swimming in the Olympics only knowing Wu Peng, but then this cutie grabbed my attention when he got silver in the 400 m freestyle…only 0.58 seconds behind Park Taehwan.  Even though he was sad about his loss, he was so adorable in the videos, and looked like actor Tong Dawei, except so much sweeter and cuter…and now you know why I watch sports. But, he really was one of my favorites at the Games (not an easy thing considering I loved the entire Chinese gymnastics, diving and badminton, men’s volleyball, etc teams). And now at the World Championships in Italy he dominated  in the 800m race, beating second place  by a full three seconds.

Jane Zhang is officially too cool for all of us. We all know that she has that polished voice with incredible range, and an acute business sense that has lead her all the way to success. But this girl has many sides, and one of them is being a rabid soccer fan, one who’s great with predictions and done World Cup commentating. Her favorite team is FC Barcelona and  she was invited to support their Chinese fansite through a new photoshoot, where she wears her own official jersey, emblazoned with Z.Jane and the number of her favorite player, Messi, whom she got to meet and gave her CDs to. The pictures will be featured in the August issue of a sports magazine. Go below for more pics and blog entries she’s done related to the last World Cup.

BOBO was kept busy recently with the release of their show, NONSTOP, and celebrated their two year anniversary with the release of a new photo diary that I’ve already added to my list of goodies to buy. They also wrote loving speeches to each other.

Guo Jingjing back to the pool

Reporter: If diving were a person, how would you describer her?
Guo Jingjing: She is me, and I am her…
The most beautiful moments of diving are the beginning and the ending of a dive. The beginning is like when a painters picks up her brush, contemplating a perfect picture…When you finish, under the water, you’ll know. If you dived well, your whole body will know. Everything is very smooth, comfortable.

-Guo Jingjing on Cosmopolitan

After hesitating about the threat of the Swine flu, the Chinese diving team finally decided to compete in Fort Lauderdale in Florida in the US Grand Prix on May 7-10. Along with them will be Guo Jingjing, who has been on break doing photoshoots such as the above one until now.

Han Han wants more pay for writers

hanhan2

Han Han deciding whether to shave off more writers' money or Guo Jingming's precious hair.

…and he’s going to start with himself.

Han Han,  national racecar champion, high school dropout, bestseller and the other symbol of the 80′s generation writers, actually agrees with his “archrival” Guo Jingming for once.  Like Guo Jingming, he’s going to start his own literary magazine. In it, he plans to pay writers more money per character than ever. The top half of the submissions will receive 2000 yuan per 1000 characters, and the second half will receive 1000 yuan per 1000 characters(can someone explain to me how this is different from  one yuan per one character?). According to him, this is ten to twenty times the industry average, and twice the amount that the best writers receive from top magazines.

He also suggests a “worst submissions column,” where he’ll pick the two or three worst submissions per column and pay them 250yuan per 1000 characters. To prevent plagiarism, he’ll also pay 500yuan per 1000characters to whoever first finds the plagiarism. And no, you can’t plagiarize under one name and then report yourself under another.

Bao Chunlai wins at Asian Badminton Championships

Chen Long and his senior Bao Chunlai

I haven’t talked much about sports in a while, even though when I started this site I had intended to because I was still in Olympics mode. I simply forgot to check sports sections of Sina, Sohu, etc. However, today I saw this on yahoo accidentally and was pleasantly surprised to hear Bao Chunlai had won the Asian badminton championships , which is rather good considering that most of the dominant players in this game are Asian.

Bao Chunlai, when we last left him, had shaved his hair off and went bald because he didn’t place in the Olympics. Seeing him back to form (ie his good-looking happy self) was really nice. Getting the silver was Chen Long, a tall (189cm), 19-year-old from Xiamen who is the Chinese junior champion,  someone people say will be the next Lin Dan, and has already beaten the world number 1.

Tian Liang to dive into Lei Feng

tianliang21

hotness cannot be covered by sand

Diving is known for producing hot guys, and Tian Liang’s one of the hottest (the Olympic gold medals just add to the package). After leaving the team in 2007, he’s became an actor, starring opposite An Yixuan in Nv Lang Zhi Nv and guest starring in Gillian’s Fantastic Water Babes. His next role, which he wanted to act for free, was Lei Feng, a soldier who has posthumously been molded into a myth of selflessness and kindness by the government. In spite of the petition signed by 70 of Lei Feng’s comrades against him playing the role, Tian Liang looks strikingly similar to the portrait of Lei Feng. An interview with Tian Liang below the cut, translated by dbskholic (more…)
