Fantasy and reality come together in Starry Starry Night

Like a fairytale book came to life, Starry Starry Night (星空) is a rare Greater Chinese film that stars two young leads in a fantastical adventure that is nevertheless sensitive to human emotions. Directed by Lin Shu-yu (林書宇), based on the picture book of the same name, Starry Starry Night is a coproduction between Huayi Brothers and Atom Cinema.

“To Lin’s credit, the film is a seemingly effortless balance between the real and the imagined. Folded paper animals come to life, and a train flies into Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night. With these fantastical visions and Jake Pollock’s exuberant cinematography, Lin adeptly takes audiences on an adventure of childhood innocence and imagination.”

“Xu Jiao (徐嬌) plays 13-year-old Mei, the only child in a family that is on the way toward disintegration as the parents grow increasingly apart from each other. Distressed at home and unable to connect with schoolmates, Mei finds comfort in her doting grandfather (Kenneth Tsang, 曾江), who carves her wooden animals that keep her company when she feels alone.

Jay (Eric Lin, 林暉閔), a transfer student, catches Mei’s attention with his quietness and artistic inclination. Friendship buds and then flourishes between the two lonely souls, but the newly found happiness comes to an abrupt halt when Mei’s grandfather passes away and her parents announce their divorce. Distraught, the two friends decide to run away from their troubles.

Lin is a versatile director, capable of both soberly observing hormone-raging teens in Winds of September and producing a tender portrait of female sensitivity that vividly captures the warmth and melancholy so tangibly evoked in Jimmy Liao’s illustrated world.

The adult cast members — including Guey Lun-mei (桂綸鎂), Rene Liu (劉若英) and Harlem Yu (庾澄慶) — give solid performances, but the film’s true stars are undoubtedly Xu, who made her first big-screen appearance in Stephen Chow’s (周星馳) 2008 CJ7 (長江七號), and Lin, a first-time actor with a natural talent. Together, the two make a convincing young couple having their first taste of love.”

Hunan TV shows who's the boss in promotions with the new HZGG trailer

Finally, a trailer that makes me want to see the series.

It’s not hard to see why Hunan TV dramas are so popular after comparing this trailer with the original Qiong Yao ones for the New My Fair Princess 还珠格格.  While Qiong Yao’s was awkward, Hunan TV’s trailers that aired this week brings out all the nostalgia of the first one, the pretty scenery of the new one, and combines it all with a dramatic drumroll and solid voice that builds up the excitement.

The series will premier on July 15th on Hunan TV, and will  be aired in late July by Taiwan’s CTS and Hong Kong’s TVB. Sohu and Youku will both also stream the series online, hopefully without too much regional limits. In addition to the casts promoting on Hunan TV, CTS has announced that they will spend about 3 million taibi ($105,000) in promoting the cast in Taiwan, more than triple the previous record for drama promotions for the channel and definitely a first for a mainland drama in Taiwan. Rights for the drama has also been sold in Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Korea and Singapore.

Hunan TV will use the original actor’s voices for all the leads, while the CTS and TVB versions will all be dubbed by a different cast.

Thanks to the Fierce Wife, Yu Kewei and Lin Fan are holding concerts and grabbing awards.

Thanks to the Fierce Wife, Yu Kewei and Lin Fan are finally holding concerts and grabbing awards.

After topping Taiwanese KTV and radio charts for weeks through her insert song  Count on 指望, eeMedia’s Yu Kewei joins Lin Fan to release an OST including the songs for The Fierce Wife 犀利人妻. The popularity of the song gave the Taiwanese audience recognization of Yu Kewei’s skilled and ethereal voice. On YouTube, she’s one of the few mainland singers to have over 1 million plays.

After “The Fierce Wife,” Rock Records’ next big project is the OST for the New Huan Zhu Ge Ge/My Fair Princess. Hopefully, we’ll hear these two girls’ voices singing of the joys of Xiao Yanzi or the woes of Princess Fragrance.

The OST also features a new duet by the two, “listen to your words.” Watch the MV below from

Yu Kewei tops Taiwan charts with Hope, films MV a year later

Although it took her nearly a year, Yu Kewei now finally has a song to her name that matches her heavenly voice.

Yu Kewei’s 指望/Hope got so popular in Taiwan recently that a MV was filmed for it a year after the song’s release. Following Ding Dang, Yu Kewei is another recent mainlander whose music has made it across the strait to top KTV charts. Like Ding Dang, whose popularity soared up her songs  for SETTV’s drama Autumn’s Concerto, Yu Kewei’s popularity came from her song 指望/Hope in SETTV’s  The Fierce Wife. The song showcases Yu Kewei’s airy voice with a song whose lyrics wraps perfectly around the tune.

Are you afraid to be rejected? Afraid to be ignored? Afraid to be lost in the mires of fate?
When love declares itself to be missing, the proud rose welts petal by petal.
Even if you apologize, regret, once love falls, it can no longer fly again.
Don’t count on me to forgive, don’t count on me to empathize
, love cannot be recovered with a nod.”

The song, first released last March as a part of her debut album from Rock Records (Emil Chou, Genie Zhuo, etc.), has been at the top of numerous Taiwanese charts, including both single downloads and KTV picks, recently, and has soared to become the most played video on our beloved fountainpark723′s YouTube channel.

Jane Zhang uses her confidence to help newcomer Pan Chen, who has signed under Jane's company Show City Times

Although Jane Zhang‘s successes have given her the image of a flawless goddess, a rare glimpse of Jane’s emotional side was shown when she teared up upon winning the Best Female Artist for the 5th time in a row at the Chinese Pop Music Awards last week. The singer cried as she talked about the confidence and transformation she’s seen in the past five years.

“The first 20 years of my life, I was like a speck of sand. I felt like if were I to disappear, no one would even call the police. I was a very non-confident person. But in these five years, standing on the stage, I’ve found my own confidence,” Jane said.

Her emotional moment ended as she asked Wang Leehom, who was on the stage for Best Male Artist, for an impromptu duet, after which Leehom gives her a quick peck on the cheeks. Still flabbergasted by the duet, Leehom recalled of when he first dreamed of her and the duet, and thanked Jane for being his inspiration. Once he re-composed himself, he returned to his usual self promoting the collaboration of the entire music industry to make it better.
