SOP Queen to begin a new romance on and of TV

SET TV (Prince Turns Frog, Fated to Love You) Queen Chen Qiaoen and Hunan TV Prince (Meteor Shower, Fall in Love) Zhang Han meets in a romance of two cities.

Chen Qiaoen and Zhang Han makes an unexpected couple in the  first ever Hunan TV and SETTV coproduction SOP Queen.  Chen Qiaoen plays a hardworking but lowly employee who is shocked by an open confession by her boss (Godfrey Gao), only to realize it is not she that he loves.  Heartbroken, she finds comfort with an internet friend Tom and begins her life anew in Shanghai.  There, she finds success in business and perhaps even love in new employee Tang Jun.  It turns out that in fact, Tang Jun and Tom are the same successful business heir played by Zhang Han.  When the Tang family business comes to trouble, it is up to the SOP Queen and Tang Jun to save the day. Beauties of the Emperor releases photos

Chen Qiaoen, Mingdao, Luo Jin and Yu Shanshan acts out a four-way love triangle in the founding of a new dynasty.

Beauties of the Emperor, the latest Yu Zheng drama (Schemes of a Beauty, Gong/Palace Lockheart), puts a twist on the familiar Han founding story. He breaks up the tragic love wellknown from “Farewell my concubine” and instead pairs King Xiang Yu (Mingdao) with his colleague and then rival Emperor Liu Bang’s wife – Lv Zhi (Chen Qiaoen).  The costume designer is that of films Painted Skin and the original Chinese Ghost Story.

Unlike the last couple of Yu Zheng dramas , this drama’s costumes are not as historical and groundbreaking, but they’re pretty and shiny for the most part. I really like how vibrant the men’s outfits are.  Photos and characters below the cut. (more…)

Chen Qiaoen, Mingdao, Dong Jie and Zhang Jiani star in Yu Zheng dramas

Chen Qiaoen plays Empress Lv Zhi in a tragic story of the choice between love and power.

Production begun on two new Yu Zheng (Mei Ren Xin ji/Schemes of a Beauty, Gong/Palace) productions. Beauties of the Emperor 王的女人 brings back together Prince Turns Frog couple Chen Qiaoen and Mingdao, along with Kym Jin Sha (why is she never the lead?!) and tells the story of the fall of Qin and the rise of Han through the lives of the Empress Lv Zhi and Concubine Yu Ji.  Meanwhile, Qing Cheng Xue 倾城雪 stars Dong Jie, Du Chun and Zhang Jiani and focuses on a Tang – dynasty tale of an embroiderer.
Although Qing cheng Xue is not scripted by Lu Zheng but Golden Bell winner Li Shunci, both dramas should gain the benefit of having Yu Zheng’s high-qualitied production values that includes gorgeous, often authentic costumes and sets. Qing Cheng Xue begun filming this week, and Beauties of the Emperor begins filming in mid-April.

After boybands, come idol dramas?

Will HIT-5 be the first mainland boyband to star in idol dramas?

Are idol dramas a natural procession to boybands? HIT-5 hopes so

Anhui TV stated that it would invest in a drama that is a mix of Meteor Garden and Prince Turns Frog last week. According to the news article, the drama is mostly Taiwanese in nature, with its production team from Taiwanese CTV (which did the original Meteor Garden), but it will be purchased by Anhui TV. The producer stated that “Jerry Yan has already agreed to being the lead, though age is an issue.” The main actresses  was to be chosen between Chen Qiaoen and Jolin Tsai.

In a later article, Anhui TV corrected themselves by saying that it is an original script about a poor girl and two rich guys, though they will look to dramas like Meteor Garden and Prince Turns Frog for guidance. Furthermore, they might look to mainland for the supporting actors and actresses.  While the Meteor Garden rumor is definitely false, the rest could potentially be true, though still unlikely.  But then, Anhui TV has been mainland’s exclusive channel for Jungiery(Mingdao, Qiaoen) dramas.
