Yu Xiaowei getting ambushed with questions about Gao YuanYuan

This was from maybe two weeks ago actually… I just haven’t had time to post it until now. While most news portals’ main attraction at this event was Yu Xiaowei ‘s appearance so they could ask him questions about his relationship with Gao Yuanyuan (which has received even more interest now after Xia Yu and Yuan Quan’s marriage), I just wanted to celebrate HOTSPOT, because despite it only having existed for two years and it only being a biweekly magazine, I’ve already grown to love it in contrast to Vogue or Elle in China.

1/3 of "Chengdu, I Love You" Becomes its Own Movie

AE69B2FA02291D5B1A84E0EE46040C6B

In my growing apathy for this movie, I failed to miss this bizarre news which brought my interest back up a notch, and along with it many mixed feelings. As you may have read in early reports, this movie was supposed to show past, present, and future Chengdu, Sichuan, perhaps my favorite city. Well, it seems that the present-day segment, directed by the Korean director Heo Jin-ho,  has become so commercially enticing that it is being developed into its own movie called Season of Good Rain, leaving the past and future segments in its dust. I feel sorry for the Venice film festival thinking that it invited a full movie to close its festival, but only ending upwith 2/3. I feel sorry for the other two directors as well.  But at the same time, I’m almost rejoicing.

Various Photoshoots

Fan Bingbing recently graced the cover of ELLE magazine, who labeled 2009 as the “Year of Fan Bingbing Movies”, a very apt description. Fan Bingbing starred or will be starring in 7 movies: Shinjuku Incident, Sophie’s Revenge, Wheat, Bodyguards and Assassins, East Wind. Rain, Future Cops and an unnamed one. She’ll also be starring her own production, the drama ,The Last Night of Madame Chin.

We’re including in this post as well, several other photoshoots that we found pretty, but were too lazy to make their own separate posts for. There’s He Zhuoyan who idarklight likes, from the upcoming HSDS adaptation, Sun Feifei, a tv actress who most people seem to like, and Ma Tianyu who we’re curious to see act and pass judgement on. And then there’s Zhang Ziyi, and the director/cast for Nanking! Nanking! who we thank for already giving us ample to  pass judgement on.

Gao Yuanyuan does Magazines

April 28, 2009 | Posted in Mainland China,Photoshoot, Tagged

Updated because she had a new photoshoot. I wonder how many she’ll do during this promotion time for Nanking! Nanking! The movie has now, over the course of its opening weekend, raked in 70 million, and broke Red Cliff’s record for how many screens it got in China.

What happens when a very pretty actress stars in the most buzzed about post-holiday season movie in China? She does photoshoots and lots of them for magazines. She’ never truly obtained that leading lady status recognition but she always is so bent on making her career meaningful, and analyzing what being an actress means, that it’s hard not to root for her to get that recognition. Nanking! Nanking! is doing well from first day reports, getting about 9 million yuan, nearly the same as Red Cliff. Not bad. Here’s hoping Gao Yuanyuan’s publicity will help the movie go even higher.

Nanking Massacre films to hit the theaters in April

Both H.Y. Brothers’  John Rabe and Lu Chuan’s Nanking! Nanking (also known as City of Life and Death) have been approved to be aired in China in late April.

Lu’s film looks at the massacre from the perspectives of a Chinese soldier, a Japanese soldier and a foreign missionary. The censors assessed the film over a period of five months, and a couple of violent scenes had to be revised.

Oscar-winning German helmer Florian Gallenberger‘s biopic about Nazi party member John Rabe, who saved hundreds of thousands of lives by setting up a safe area in the city during the attack, will be released on April 28, Tang Jingting of Huayi Brothers confirmed.

Nanking! Nanking! : China Begins to Look at Own Holocaust

u1819p28t3d1613083f326dt20070626031224

Why was a Holocaust with a death count of hundreds of thousands a forgotten one? And why is it being remembered now? While this subject has often been placed into the realm of political sentiment, at the heart of it is simply a matter of finding self-identity from the past.

China fifty years ago after the Holocaust was burdened by the toll that Qing dynasty decay, WWII, and a devastating civil war took on it, in no shape to ask for any sort of remembrance for the victims of the massacres. Also, unlike the Jews after World War II, China was communist and thus could not receive help in this matter from abroad. Thus fifty years passed while China tried to rebuild itself with far more pressing matters to think about than the past. Only the present and future mattered. However, recently China has gotten to a economic state where she has the luxury of remembering this forgotten Holocaust.

Recently a string of movies have been made about this subject; as the Chinese movie industry grows, more and more Chinese directors have wanted to tackle it. The newest is perhaps the most promising yet…Nanking! Nanking! by Lu Chuan, starring Liu Ye and Gao Yuanyuan.

Edit: I found teh cover of the magazine this shoot was for. Not so bw and white anymore.

I was looking for photoshoots of Gao Yuan Yuan because I saw the below video at Sina of her looking back on 10 years of her career, and I knew that she had a photoshoot for it (I don’t think this is it however, but it is new). She next appears in “Nanking Nanking (English title: City of Life and Death)” with Liu Ye. (more…)

Chinese Celebrities When They Were Young

I said I would do a special fun post in exchange for someone making my banner when site hit 10,000. Well, here it is as promised, although nobody ever made me a banner. :( This is still incomplete…I don’t have a few people in here, and I wanted to put an after pic of everyone, but I got way too tired of that so I only put some for some people I didn’t think people would know (like all the mainland guys apparently), but eventually I will update this and make it the most comprehensive Chinese celeb baby picture list ever.

Love or hate her, you’ve got to admit Liu Yifei was one of the most adorable children ever.

More of cute adorable children behind the cut. I think it’s really rare for Chinese people to do plastic surgery (as of now) so this won’t be one of those “spot the differences” posts. This took a lot of time and effort to put together, so PLEASE DO NOT COPY AND POST ANYWHERE ELSE, w/o permission.
