Stills from the new Palace series

December 20, 2011 | Posted in Mainland China,Television, Tagged ,

As always, Yu Zheng has filled his cast with eyecandy. The soft pink maid costumes of the original Palace series has given way to a turquoise blue, but the rest of the set is still quite dazzling. Gong II now features the addition of  Hai Lu, who will return to the Qing to play another caring, compassionate lady, Du Chun as the seventeenth prince, and Sun Feifei as Empress Zhen’er. Zhang Jianni will play a concubine of Yongzheng’s, with a potential rival in Bai Bing‘s Consort Wan and Shu Chang‘s Haitang.  Meanwhile, Zhao Liying and Chen Xiao will play another couple (19th). Feng Shaofeng and Yang Mi will reprise their roles from the original drama, but will not feature as prominently as before.

Palace/Gong II to start filming soon

July 26, 2011 | Posted in Mainland China,Television, Tagged , , ,

Following the success of Palace Lockheart Jade, the sequel, Gong II/ “宫锁珠帘” (Palace Lock Pearl Curtain) will begin filming in August soon. The series brings back together the old cast(?) for a new adventure in, unfortunately, still the Qing.   The plot synopsis for Gong II below.

The new Gong tells of a new love story set in the times of Yongzheng. Lian’er asked her father to let her into the palace so that she could meet the seventeenth prince, Yunli. The two fall in love and originally planned to marry. But, when Yunli’s teacher Alinga lands in trouble, Yunli has no choice but to marry Alinga’s daughter to save him. A heartbroken Lian’er does her best to protect herself in the palace, desperately dreaming of being able to leave the palace and live an ordinary life. She did not expect to become a piece in a power play, used by those with power and betrayed a girl she had once thought of as a sister. Alliances are made, debts are formed, and just as Lian’er is about to go under, she accidentally attracts the fancy of Yongzheng and becomes one of his consorts. Suddenly, everything becomes so complicated – if she stops now, she will be hurt; but she fears losing herself if she continues. She chooses to believe in the light, and to trust that her perseverance will see her through this storm.

Members of girl group AK98 cosplays as Gong characters

Upcoming girl group AK98 (Angel’s Kiss) took advantage of timetravelling drama Palace/Gong‘s recent popularity to jump start its career before even debuting. Two members, Xiaopai 小排 and Chenxi 晨熙, cosplayed as Gong characters in a photoshoot and music video shoot. Before joining AK98, Xiaopai was a member of a cosplaying group in her college, and had gained internet fame by cosplaying various characters. I’m not sure if the cosplaying is a part of official promotions or just for fun among Xiaopai’s friends.

Thanks to swtaznlaydee@Cfensi for the photos, and see more below the cut.

Feng Shaofeng and Yang Mi in a photoshoot for Gong.

To promote their new drama Gong/Palace, Yang Mi and Feng Shaofeng recently went on various Hunan TV shows, showing off their cuteness as both an onscreen couple and off-screen friends. They first met when filming six to seven years ago, and has since then become good friends. On Happy Camp, Feng Shaofeng talks about visiting Yang Mi when she was sick, and wanting to give her a toilet as a present. Following Palace, another period drama starring the two – The Legend of the Tiger Amulet(虎符传奇) – will air later this year.

Did you know there's an arrow in your hair Qingchuan? Let me get that for you.

Famous drama screenwriter Yu Zheng, fresh off the success of his latest series Schemes of a Beauty/Mei Ren Xin Ji unveiled the cast of his newest drama, called Gong this past July, and using some of the same actors and actresses from Schemes, with Yang Mi as the female lead this time, and Feng Shaofeng (only a cameo in Schemes) as the male one. The story revolves around time traveling to the Qing Dynasty (a popular theme in Chinese literature). Yang Mi’s character, Luo Qingchuan gets transported to the time of Kang Xi, and realizing this, tries to get on the good side of the 4th son (Mickey He) since according to history he wins the throne, and the rest of the brothers…don’t. However, the playful and mischievous 8th brother (Feng) both pulls pranks and falls in love with Qingchuan, and vice versa, complicating matters and Qingchuan’s plans.

Yesterday, new stills were releasing, showing the playful, antagonistic early side of their relationship, which you can see below the cut. The drama also boasts an extremely large budget, with some pieces of jewelry alone costing tens of thousands of yuan.
