The bottom half broke my heart

Recommended by Li Yuchun, Jane Zhang, Huang Yali, Ye Yiqian, Chen Xibei, Chen Chusheng, Su Xing, Wei Chen, Wang Baoqiang, etc... I think they forgot Wei Chen's name

A year after she announced her break with eeMedia and finally showing some of her old hyper excitement (and losing some of her depression), Super Girl He Jie is releasing her new new book on her birthday on March 25th.  In addition to being recommended by the people listed in the captions, the book features the cartoons of He Jie’s little brother, current Central Arts Academy student He Yun, and the literary guidance of Tan Kuo, one of the top eeMedia lyricists who penned songs like Top Combine’s Arrival, Tan Lina’s Feline, Pan Chen’s No Big Deal and Super Girls/Boys’ Sing Loudly.

After the lawsuit, He Jie released a single late last year that shifted from her old sexy image to a graceful one. She then did a 180 degrees turn by posing shirtless for Esquire, showing that it wasn’t just eeMedia that turned her from tomboy to sexy. With her new single, she then went on various variety shows, including Hunan TV’s Jie Jie Gao Sheng. Through these shows, she seems to have slowly came out of her former depression and has been more and more lively, slowly bringing back her chirpy music style that I love so much.

Ethnic minorities in Chinese entertainment

Does she look Chinese to you?

One of the most frustrating things about introducing new Chinese artists are the “they don’t look Chinese” comments. Considering China has 56 official ethnicities with their ancestral homes in China, and who knows how many unofficial ones, and 1.3 billion people, it’s unfair to homogenize any part of China (or of the world ). And according to wikipedia, minority populations are rising at 7 times the rate of the Han Chinese because the One Child Policy only applies to Han Chinese (no, China is not trying to eliminate its minorities via One Child).

Photographer Chen Haiwen recently paid a tribute to the diversity of China by producing a series of photos that captured this diversity. Along with a team of photographers, he traveled across China for a year to take photos of a family from each ethnic group. Those, along with thousands of other photos captured on the trip, were put on display in Beijing’s WangFuJing Street last month. zhouzhzh on youtube has a slideshow of all the photos.

Here’s a spot light on some, definitely not all, minority Chinese artists in pop culture.

Super Girls releasing new songs

Super Girls 2009 iBubble commercial

Going backwards from 2009, the the first 2009 Super Girl to release a MV was top 60 Luo Zhenhuan for her new EP. Zeng Yike will be the first to release her new album. See her album cover (with a sheep!) here. Meanwhile, Jiang Yingrong sings the new theme for Maybelline. You can hear the recorded version here, or you can watch the much superior live version:

Confessions of a Super Girl

I miss He Jie.

Who wouldn't fall in love with those gorgeous eyes and the beautiful voice?

A love letter from 2009 Super Girl Pan Hongyue to 2005 Super Girl He Jie, via Pan Hongyue’s sina blog. He Jie was increasingly unhappy in her years at eeMedia back when Long Danni hadn’t taken over the company, and left it before her contract, which put her and eeMedia in a bad position. Happily the comapny seems to still have amicable relations with her as He Jie is to go on Jie Jie Gao Sheng to promote her new single.

In 2007, I finally attended the college (Sichuan Conservatory of Music, where both girls attended) I liked, to see the person I want to see.
Today, I begin to remember. I miss Baobao (He Jie’s nickname is Jie Baobao aka Baby Jie), I miss her very much.
I like you, but I’ve never done anything for you.
I saw you on TV. I was happy because you smiled, I was sad because you cried.
Today, I rewatched your videos, the latest ones and the old ones.
I know that the status quo is not what you want, but who can I understand you!!!!
When I see the dark bags around your eyes become heavy, my heart aches, aches so much! ! !

I hate hearing anyone saying bad things about you, because they’re all idiots!
They don’t understand you, they don’t understand your troubles. Although I’ve never met you, I know you’re not that type of person.

I trust you! I’m not very happy today, neither. Watching you returning to our school in 2007, the bravery with which you sung, I like you, not because of your voice but you yourself. There’s no f-ing reason why, I simply do!

Happy 70th birthday to the Sichuan Conservatory of Music!

Slide1

clockwise from upper left: Li Yuchun, Li Yundi, He Jie, Tan Weiwei, Pan Hongyue, Wei Chen, Alan, Ma Xueyang (Top Combine)

What do world-class pianoists Li Yundi, Super Girl and Boys Li Yuchun (1st), He Jie (4th), Tan Weiwei(2nd), Wei Chen(3rd), Top Combine’s Ma Xueyang, Pan Hongyue and Alan Dawadolma all have in common?

They came from the Sichuan Conservatory of Music, the school we’re all biased for. In an unofficial count, around half of all mainland singers who have good vocals are either from Sichuan or went to the Sichuan Conservatory of Music. In the last four Super Girl/Boy competitions, 9 out of the 16 top 4 singers fit in the above category.

For their school’s birthday, Li Yuchun, He Jie and Wei Chen performed free on the 14th in a “national singing competition winner’s concert” hosted by the school of pop music. Li Yundi performed at another concert on the 13th.

Here’s to Sichuan Conservatory of Music. Happy birthday, and may you produce many more talented students.

Wei Chen singing a song that really grew on me, but may never be released because Le Huo Nan Huo didn’t do good enough.

I think this may be a Watercube replica that she's holding, but it also might just be tofu. It also might be tofu in the shape of the watercube.

What’s the difference between one and four?

In the first year of their stardom, Chris Lee and He Jie, once best friends from the Sichuan Music Conservatory, won 1st and 4th respectively in Super Girls.

Four years later, March 2009 -
For her birthday, Chris Lee held her annual Why Me concert in Guangdong with soldout tickets and a sea of yellow.

Two weeks later, on He Jie’s birthday, He Jie announced that she would leave EE Media.
Why such different outcomes?

In honor of He Jie, the cute “Jie Baobao”, and both myself and Cfensi’s favorite Supergirl alumni, this is a look into eeMedia’s flaws. Btw – don’t take anything out of here without also posting its companion piece coming soon.

This is the performance that drew me into cpop. Hopefully, He Jie’s musical dreams are only hibernating and will make a comeback soon.
