Huang Xiaoming stars as the patriot Yue Fei

Huang Xiaoming steps into the role of another legendary hero.

Huang Xiaoming of “Return of the Condor Heroes” fame is to star in “The Patriot Yue Fei 精忠岳飞”as the title character, the staunch Song general Yue Fei. The 60-episode series is estimated to be broacast in December and will chronicle Yue Fei’s life from his lowly beginnings to his ultimate demise by the machinations of Qin Hui, to be played by Gallen Lo. More pictures of Huang Xiaoming in costume under the cut.

As “The Patriot Yue Fei” will be a war genre story, it’s not surprising that the cast is dominated by males. In fact, so far ”The Patriot of Yue Fei”  seems to feature no leading women whatsoever. (Given the role the historical Yue Fei’s mother played in his life, however, this could prove to be wrong.) Fan Bingbing will not be acting, but she has invested in the production.

Huang Xiaoming, always the filial son

The wonderful mother-son relationship between Huang Xiaoming and his mom is one of the worst-kept secrets in Chinese entertainment. Xiaoming frequently praises his mother in interviews, and she, apart from saying that he has no shortcomings, also often accompanies him when he’s filming to make sure the directors don’t work him too hard.

Until recently we only had bad-quality paparazzi photos of the two of them together, but now the two of them have graced the cover of Good Housekeeping magazine, just in time for Mother’s Day!

Zhao Wei for Harper’s Bazaar and Huang Xiaoming for CeCi

Previous classmates and future co-stars

Previous classmates and future co-stars

Huang Xiaoming previously missed out on a chance to work with classmate and close friend Vicki Zhao Wei when she chose not to reprise her role in Princess Returning Pearl III, but he revealed that the two of them will be collaborating in a new project called Di Dao Zhan (地道战), possibly titled Underground Resistance in English. Not much about the movie has been released yet, except that it has nothing to do with the household 1965 movie of the same name, which was about China’s War of Resistance against Japan, and instead talks about a story about the passing-through of time and space (时空穿越的故事).

In the meantime, the future co-stars have been featured on a fair number of magazine covers. Unfortunately, they haven’t gotten a photoshoot together, but I’m hoping they’ll get one for their new movie. Here, Zhao Wei poses for Harper’s Bazaar, and Huang Xiaoming for CeCi.

Huang Xiaoming Releases Song About Flood Relief in Southern China

An unusually scruffy-looking Huang Xiaoming sings a beautiful song about the flood relief in China

Despite the barrage of rumors that Huang Xiaoming has had to face this year, his attention and his heart are still focused on what really matters: helping those in need of help. A few days ago, he released a song called My South (我的南方), which addresses the recent floods plaguing Southern China. Although not known for being a fabulous singer, Huang Xiaoming insisted that he would “make a great effort to sing this song well, despite not coming from a professional singing background,” and his effort definitely pays off.

MV for My South:

The three days it took for Huang Xiaoming to learn this song and complete the recording were fraught with emotion, to the point where he could not hold back his tears while recording. One of the reasons he responded so emotionally to this song is because when he was younger, he experienced a tsunami in his hometown, Qingdao, and thus has a direct understanding of the destruction caused by a natural disaster. “I remember the largest waves I ever saw when I was kid,” he says. “I was standing at the seaside watching the scenery, and a typhoon suddenly came, a tsunami came. Just seeing those waves… When I went swimming, I used to think the ocean spray was very comfortable. I didn’t expect those waves to be able to reach over three meters and be able to cover a person’s entire body and strike someone down. I thought, my God, so nature can actually be so terrible when she is angry.”

The lyrics (and an attempt at a translation) for My South can be found behind the cut, as well as a bit about the recent rumors surrounding Huang Xiaoming.

Everyone’s favorite Panda Ambassador Huang Xiaoming spent the day with his panda children, Ping Ping and An An, in order to celebrate their second birthday. He arrived early this morning at the Shanghai Wildlife Zoo, bringing with him an enormous birthday cake made of carrots and apples, and personally fed his son and daughter. He also posted some adorable panda-related photos on his weibo (Sina Twitter). So much cuteness to be had — it’s a shame birthdays only come once a year.

On a slightly related note, this is incredibly late, but Huang Xiaoming released an MV for his song Reunion (团团圆圆) almost two months ago. This was back when people were starting to speculate his relationship with Angelababy, but everyone knows pandas are more important than relationship rumors. Okay, maybe that’s just me. Anyhow, I’m kind of disappointed that I didn’t find out this MV existed until yesterday, but it’s so cute it just washes away all my disappointment. It actually doesn’t contain any new footage, apart from the parts where he’s singing, but it has pandas and that’s all that matters:

Possibility of Yao Ming-Kobe Bryant Basketball Movie

These two NBA stars might be in a movie together

These two NBA stars might be in a movie together

The slogan of the National Basketball Association — “where amazing happens” — might be going international, as the Shanghai Film Group Corporation is planning to film a basketball movie starring Yao Ming and other NBA stars. Backed by NBA commissioner David Stern, the movie is reportedly named Amazing, a name suggested by Stern and inspired by the NBA slogan. The Chinese name is Shen Qi (神奇).

The movie, to be directed by mainland director Hu Xuehua, will be about American basketball stars training in China, but apart from the name and general plot, not much else has been revealed. When telephoned by reporters yesterday, the chairman of the Shanghai Film Group Corporation, Ren Zhonglun, stated, “At the present time, it can only be said that the name of the movie has been determined. The actors, investors, and other details and problems will have to wait until after we sign the contract to be revealed.”

Nevertheless, thanks to the support of the NBA, the possibility that NBA stars will participate is enormous. Apart from Yao Ming, there are hopes that Lakers shooting guard Kobe Bryant and the retired Magic Johnson will join the film. According to reports, Yao Ming and Johnson have already agreed to act, and the company is currently in contact with Kobe. In reply to this, Ren Zhonglun only admitted that they really were in contact with Yao Ming, Johnson, and other NBA stars, but that before signing the contract, it was not convenient to say more.

Filming will begin in August, exactly during the NBA off-season, and must finish before October to match with the start of the new season. Insiders revealed that the most important film roles will be the master and apprentice, played respectively by Yao Ming and mainland star Huang Xiaoming. Hong Kong actor-singer Shawn Yue may also be appearing.

Shawn Yue, who had once been on the Hong Kong youth basketball team, said to the Hong Kong media yesterday that it was true that both sides had been in contact, and that he hoped to participate if his schedule fit. Huang Xiaoming’s manager, Zhou Siwei, confirmed that they were in the middle of discussion with the company.

Huang Xiaoming to film Guo Jingming’s Ice Fantasy

What happens when mermaids and Ice Princes marry, when fantasy meets wuxia, when reality and illusions collide, and when to save the person you love, you must destroy everything that he holds dear?

Such is the world of Guo Jingming’s Ice Fantasy, actor Huang Xiaoming‘s first film investment. Huang Xiaoming said that given his experience, “Ice Fantasy” is a movie with a lot of potential.  Ice Fantasy will be one of several Chinese fantasy movies to look forward to in the future. Others include 3D film Mermaid Kingdom and Meteor Shower lead Zhang Han’s Change of Fated Stars.

Huang Xiaoming, who shot to fame in series like the Return of the Condor Heroes, has just begun his jump from TV series to movie. Now, after multiplying his worth through his stocks of his management company Huayi Brothers, Huang Xiaoming is no longer content with just acting. Huang Xiaoming said that once, his dream was simple – “to buy a big house for my parents. Now that’s fulfilled, and they even drive Porsches when leaving the house.” Now, “I really want to do more things myself so that I can create more,” Huang Xiaoming said.

This is the second Guo Jingming film in production. His new cosmopolitan novel Tiny Times, a cross between Gossip Girls and Devil Wears Prada, has also been picked by a film company. Plans have also been made for a TV series adaption of the novel. Read Ice Fantasy legally on sina book here.

P.S. At least half of the characters in the book wears hanfu,  and one of the girls creates butterfly illusions by playing the guzheng!

Ip Man 2′s First-Week Box Office Over 100 Million Yuan

Sammo Hung and Donnie Yen at the Hong Kong premiere

Sammo Hung and Donnie Yen at the Hong Kong premiere

In its first week, Ip Man 2 brought in 105 million yuan (approx. 15.38 million USD), setting a new box office high for this year and becoming the highest-selling movie during this year’s three-day May Day (Labor Day) weekend. Originally set to premiere on April 29, the release date was pushed forward to April 27 due to favorable responses after the Beijing premiere. Over 300,000 people watched the film on its opening night.

Although the weekend also welcomed the arrival of Hollywood blockbuster (and similarly named) Iron Man 2, the industry still predicts that Ip Man 2 will be able to break 200 million after two weeks. Director Wilson Yip seems confident that it will surpass 300 million, and even says he’ll go streaking if the box office reaches 500 million.

Word of mouth says Ip Man 2 is superior to Iron Man 2, as its relaxed and humorous plot, stunning action scenes, and patriotic mood are enough to move the audience to tears. Donnie Yen‘s portrayal of Yip Man has been widely applauded for keeping with the way Chinese people perceive their martial arts masters: calm, humble, not showing off, and in general maintaining personal integrity. Only when the occasion calls for it will he bravely step forward.

Analysts say Ip Man 2′s success is not by chance, but of course it is directly related to the favorable reputation and popularity of its first installment two years ago. Director Yip has expressed that he would like to film Ip Man 3, thus completing the Ip Man trilogy and cementing the “Yip Man” trademark. This third movie would focus on the story of Yip Man and disciples Wong Leung and Bruce Lee. However, Donnie Yen has previously said that he would not want to film a third Ip Man movie. Director Yip has also revealed that finding someone to act out Bruce Lee would be a difficult problem: “We have to find someone who already resembles Bruce Lee and can fight.”

Nie Yuan Discusses Upcoming Three Kingdoms, Huang Xiaoming, and Married Life

Nie Yuan: My life is full of sunshine

Nie Yuan: "My life is full of 'sunshine'"

2004 could be said to have been Nie Yuan‘s most glorious year. In that year he starred in a succession of costume dramas and was referred to by the media as the “number one male in costume dramas.” Because of this, when Zhang Jizhong was looking for someone to play the part of Yang Guo in Return of the Condor Heroes (Shen Diao Xia Lü), everyone thought Nie Yuan would be the ideal choice. But in the end, Nie Yuan lost out to an actor who, at the time, was much less famous: Huang Xiaoming.

The casting dispute became a watershed event in their work: one saw his fame shoot to the top; the other did not. Many of the media even exaggerated Nie Yuan and Huang Xiaoming’s relationship to that of irreconcilable enemies.

Upon raising the same topic now, Nie Yuan honestly admits that he was very depressed about missing out on Yang Guo, “because I was a Jin Yong fan from childhood, and out of Jin Yong’s works, my favorite was Shen Diao Xia Lü. The love story between Yang Guo and Xiao Longnü fascinated me. Of all of Jin Yong’s characters, the one I liked most was Yang Guo, so of course being able to act out Yang Guo was the desire of my dreams.”
