“Genius vs Muggle” stars the first 90′s-born couple

October 22, 2011 | Posted in Mainland China,Television, Tagged , , ,

Both born in 1991, My Fair Princess's Lu Hong and Love of the Hawthorn Tree's Jiang Ruijia plays two of the six leads in "Genius vs. Muggle."

Finally, a Hunan TV production next year with fresh, promising faces. Genius vs Muggle 天才碰麻瓜, Hunan TV’s latest production that begun filming today, tells the story of three roommates,  sunshine Yiyang, goofy Wangtian and shy Aluo, in their quest to save their medical school from Jiang Shangwen, who plots to destroy the school because of a secret of the past.  And on the way to success, of course, they’re also finding love and romance.

All four of the current revealed leads are current students, one in Central Drama  and three in Shanghai Drama, and all four were born in the 1990′s . “Love of the Hawthorn Tree”s second female lead Jiang Ruijia, who I have no recollection of, plays the “muggle,” while  New My Fair Princess’s nth male lead Lu Hong plays the “genius.”  Two other actors, Zhang Ziwen and unnamed girl, are classes of 2013 and 2015, respectively, at Shanghai Drama, so I would assume they’re even younger.

Edit: I just figured out who the last girl is -  Zhou Xuefei is a first time actress and  another current student of Shanghai Drama. Based on weibo-stalking, it seems like she might be in the same class as Jiang Ruijia, so probably another 90hou.

With his charming looks and adorable personality, Lu Hong  is so far one of my two favorite actors born in the 90′s (the other being Yang Yang, who just got robbed of a Hunan TV lead). Since his studies at Central, you can also see his tremendous improvements from two years ago in terms of acting. Jiang Ruijia has previously been supporting females for two films, picking up a best supporting actress just earlier today at the Golden Roosters for one of them. As for her two shidi and shimei, “Genius” will be their first time acting roles outside of school.

Super Girls 2009 champion Jiang Yingrong calling out for new shimei's.

After overtaking all of its competitors in the past few years, Super Girls comes back this year as the only talent competition of its kind. This year, the directing returns to eeMedia’s  VP Ma Han, who directed the 2007 and 2009 Super Boys/Girls, so no more messes like last year!

One key feature this year will be a “Girls’ Conservatory” to give a reality TV twist to the competition show.  Similar to the “Super Boys Castle” in 2007, the “Girls’ Conservatory” will allow the audience to watch even closer as the girls transform and grow into superstars. The girls will be aided by seasoned musicians like Yu.Quan, Fang Wenshan an Gong Linna.

Like in 2009, Elle magazine will work with the girls in photoshoots. New social media will also be used intensively in both promotions and selections of the artists, with sina/sohu/QQ weibo (twitter) playing a major role in the competition through ranking fandom and interacting with the artists.

Auditions begins today (April 1st) in Changsha, and will soon be followed by main regions in Shenyang, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Hangzhou and Xi’an.

Yu Haoming, who played Duanmu Lei in Meteor Shower, will again play a musician in Hunan TV's new musical drama, but now as the male lead.

After its musical movie “Le Huo Nan Hai” and musical drama “Ugly Wudi 3,” Hunan TV is set to have its 3rd try at musicals. Last month, director Chen Mingzhang (Fated to Love You, My Lucky Star, Du Lala’s Promotions) revealed that in mid-October, he will be directing an adaptation of Hong Kong musical film “我和春天有个约会  I have a date with Spring” for Hunan TV.

So far, confirmed actors include  Yu Haoming and Zhu Zixiao from the recent hit drama “Let’s Watch Meteor Shower Together” and Selina Ren of S.H.E. Selina plays the female lead, an innocent orphan singer. and  Yu Haoming will to play the male lead Shen Jiahao (沈家豪), a saxophone player with big dreams.  From his descriptions of the role, Zixiao will probably play second lead Donny, another musician who’s a playboy on the outside, but soft on the inside. The director said in his weibo that the main female lead is a Taiwanese actress. The drama will be set in the mid-30′s, around a group of singers and musicians in a night club.

Hunan TV to remake “You’re Beautiful,” starring Jiang Chao?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

8090 member Jiang Chao is a potential lead

Although eeMedia boyband 8090 has yet to debut, its members are already delving into other areas. The group’s most popular member, Jiang Chao, has revealed on his blog that he will be auditioning for Hunan TV and eeMedia’s new remake of “You’re Beautiful,” a Korean drama about a girl who accidentally became member of a popular boyband. Given their history, Hunan TV will probably only take from the general idea and change the plot significantly (generally for the better).

It is uncertain other member of 8090 will try out with him on the 12th, but this would be an interesting way for them to debut on the silver screen again. Listen to them cover Meteor Rain here.

New time-traveling series stars Yang Mi

Actress Yang Mi in her currently filming series - Four Youths of Beijing

Yang Mi in her fourth series filming this year - Four Youths of Beijing. Palace makes five. Does this girl take a break?

Ever wonder why some series have ugly leads who can’t act?
Perhaps it’s because others like the Schemes of Beauties has every one of its countless roles filled with eye candy and acting ability. One reason for the near perfect cast is due to the fact its scriptwriter Yu Zheng handpicks all of his actors, as he will do for his latest palace intrigue series with Hunan TV – Palace: Heartlock Jade (宫.锁心玉).

The new time-traveling TV series will star Yang Mi as a young, cosmopolitan girl who daydreams of romance and history. Yet when her modern-day character travels back to the Qing Dynasty, she realizes that history is not the same as her fantasies. In the dangerous harem of the Forbidden Palace, she becomes a part of the struggle to become the emperor by the nine princes, and in a fight for love between the eighth prince (Feng Shaofeng) and the yet-to-be-casted fourth prince who came to be known as the Emperor Yongzheng.

Although most of casts have yet to be announced, because scriptwriter Yu Zheng is one of the few who chooses his own cast, it’s sure to be one full of acting abilities and eye candy. (more…)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Don't look at Zhou Xun, Look at Qinghai TV - Actress Zhou Xun is the green spokesperson for the new Qinghai TV.

Every Asian drama needs a Cinderella-like makeover, and it’s no different in the rest of the TV world. Today, our heroine is Qinghai Satellite TV, the  fairy godmother is Hunan Broadcasting Systems (GBS) , and the new wardrobe is green.

With its own owner GBS, Qinghai TV will start over on the 26th with a completely new set of programs, a new logo, and a new slogan -  “Beautify Qinghai, Greenify China,” making it the first Chinese station to embrace environmentalism in its aim.

“A green life brings us healthy bodies, and a green spirit brings us healthy souls. I hope that while “Our Part” and Qinghai TV works to promote green lifestyles, we can also bring green into people’s lives,” said actress Zhou Xun, Qinghai TV’s green spokesperson.

The channel’s purchase by GBS in January is also part of GBS’s ambition to form a large media powerhouse in China. By March, Qinghai TV, last year’s second least viewed Chinese satellite channel,  expanded viewership by 174% from last December.
