December will be a movie-filled month, containing releases from three of China’s most famous directors, but out before any of these big-name releases is Just Call Me Nobody, a kung-fu-comedy flick that comes out December 3rd. Directed by Kevin Chu Yen-ping (Kung Fu Dunk) and containing a star-studded cast, the movie basically seems like a lot of slapstick and a lot of randomness, but a lot of fun.
You can’t really get much of a feel for the movie from watching the trailer or the theme song (which is a fun and bouncy song sung by the main actor), but the general premise of the story is that of a shoemaker named Wu Di who learns martial arts from a hermit after falling into a valley. Wu Di, played by Xiao Shenyang, had originally hoped to become a soldier like his father but after his father’s death, his family was left in poverty and he had to become a shoemaker in order to make a living. His favorite hobby is reading wuxia manhua, and he hopes one day to see a live battle between martial arts experts, not knowing that one day he himself will be participating in such battles.
