Female Prime Minister brings together seasoned producers and fresh cast

Mulan wasn't the only heroine to rise out of the Southern and Norther Dynasties period. From the fairest general in history to the only female prime minster, the period is filled with unexplored stories.

Two of China’s major historical producers – Yu Zheng (Palace/Gong, Schemes of a Beauty) and Gao Xixi (Happiness is like a Flower, New Romance of the Three Kingdoms) – team up for Female Prime Minister, a rare Southern and Northern Dynasties drama about the only female prime minister in Chinese history. The drama will also put a focus on the art of ceramics, as the Northern Qi era was a period of revival for Chinese ceramics.

The seasoned production team nevertheless features a young and lively cast, including first time male lead Chen Xiao, My Fair Princess’ Zhao Liyin, singer-actor Kimi Qiao Renliang, singer-actress GuiGui, and a large amount of gorgeous supporting actors like Gao Yunxiang, Lin Fei’er, Yang Rong, Qin Lan, Jiang Hong, Maggie Cheung, Leanne Lau, etc.

The drama is directed by Li Huizhu (Palace/Gong, I have a date with a vampire) and scripted by Zhang Wei (Du Lala’s Promotions). Product begun last week and plans to air next summer on Hunan TV.

Recent MV’s roundup

The most epic MV of the season was definitely What? What! by Laure Shang, who kept her rich voice but replaced the European-classy MV with half naked European guys with oiled skin.

Kimi's MV for Window of Dreams

December 16, 2009 | Posted in Indie/Rock,Mainland China,Music, Tagged

I wasn’t whether I should wait for Kimi’s other two MVs to post  but I decided to anyway because thematically, this MV is different from the others. This one reflects Kimi’s deal with promoting Windows 7 in the China market, which might give some knee-jerk reaction, but commercialism is rather embedded in Asian pop culture, even for rock bands (see Mayday’s Fang Si). It also got Kimi appearances on Hunan TV, promotion he needs because Chengtian reportedly spent a ton on perfecting the album.

Mini Pic-spam below of Kimi from his release because he has such pretty Chinese Opera-like features that always makes me stare.

Kimi in the MV for Window of Dreams on his upcoming album

Releases from mainland female Chinese artists were spread out throughout this year, but a considerable portion of the male side seem to have waited until the last minute to release, causing an massive pileup of both albums from the soloists to the boybands, ranging from pop to grunge. Despite the spectrum in musical styles, this still can’t be good for the artists, nor the companies  involved which I listed alongside the artists, and as you can see, there’s a lot.

Kimi Qiao Renliang and Tang Yan in "World Life"

Chengtian (Orange Sky’s) Entertainment’s two young Shanghainese stars, singer Kimi Qiao Renliang and actress Tang Yan appeared in a smaller magazine, World Life in a  simple shoot. China really needs more youth-oriented magazines since right now the magazines reuse the same well-established stars. Or perhaps I should say, China needs more famous youths that can sell magazines. Right now, the younger group of talent are largely unknown to the general populace, but perhaps that will change.

Kimi  is set to release an album, including the themesong he did for Windows 7 China release (In China there’s nothing you can’t have a themesong for!), which is certain to boost his visibility. Tang Yan, having shown a very solid start in acting, is next starring in the much anticipated Chengtian-finaced HK film Storm Warriors II , and she’s also supposed to appear in one of Kimi’s MVs. Chinese companies are really getting the hang of cross-promotion.

Tang Yan and Kimi Qiao Renliang are both part of  Chengtian (Orange Sky) Entertainment’s younger group of stars, and they recently went to Hong Kong to film a commercial together for Yahoo! 3reedom USB modem. Both are fierce onscreen/onstage and adorable behind the scenes. So much love for them both. Go below for more pictures and the behind the scenes clip of them filming. And some pictures of Tang Yan in Pandaman, because she looks utterly gorgeous there.

Kimi's MV for One Night in Supermarket Theme Song

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ujz8iXJKj4]

Yes, another post on this movie. I really should start posting on movies other than just those  I’m interested in, but oh well. The theme song, Tonight, of One Night in Supermarket was unveiled yesterday in a press conference. The MV centers around the secret, unrequited love that Kimi Qiao Renliang‘s character has for his fellow co-worker, played by Jacqueline Li Xiaolu.

What caught my eye was that this  song, blending a mixture of rock and and rap was composed and written by Peng Tan. However, it seems less like Peng Tan and much more suited for Kimi even though neither does rap. I don’t know what to think about this but I love the song. And the pretty lights.

The movie, directed by young newbie director Yang Qing, has had good buzz, and opens July 24th hoping to attract a wide audience, and is likely to capture the younger crowd at least.

How cute are Qiao Renliang and Li Xiaolu together?

Quick post, because I’ve been sort of busy. One Night in the Supermarket, an ensemble comedy about a 24-hour supermarket will be competing for the ” CCTV6 Chinese Film Media ” award, at the upcoming Shanghai Film Festival, one of the biggest film festivals in Asia. I’m not really sure how that award works except that it’s given out by CCTV6 and has evolved into its own subsection of the SFF. Guess why I’m interested in the movie?
