The gorgeously filmed and all-star casted  Beauties’ World 美人天下 is finally airing late this month.   The mystery/intrigue seems to have something to offer for everyone, be it suspense, romance,  intrigue, clothes or eyecandy.

This is definitely drama I’m looking forward to the most this year, mostly for its beautiful clothes and cast that includes Zhang Ting, Li Xiaolu, Mickey He, Mingdao, Yang Mi, Tong Liya, Zhang Meng, Gao Hao, Lynn Xiong, etc.
Watch the MV for  the pretty theme song by Li Xiaolu below:.

Beauties’ World showcases popular Tang dresses

Li Xiaolu in a popular Tang-styled shirt and a breast-height dress

The upcoming drama Beauties’ World about pre-Empress times of China’s only female ruler Wu Zetian also sheds light on a type of dresses now rare on screen – the then popular style of  breast-height dress + shirt combination. The few times they’re seen, they’re often mistaken for the Korean Hanbok that is more similar to the styles of the later Ming dynasty. Although this style is definitely not on the list of my favorite styles of traditional Chinese styles, Yu Zheng’s costume designers does a beautiful job of making them look good.

Below is some of my favorite outfits in the drama, and a short discussion of my limited knowledge of the traditional elements behind them. It’s a bit unfortunate that some of my favorite ones, especially Zhang Meng’s sparkly pink and Yang Mi’s bright yellow outfits, aren’t photographed, but you can see them in the trailer here. Which dress is your favorite?

The First Wind and Cloud Awards Ushers in a New Wave of Chinese Singers

Note: This was written a while ago, on 12/23 when it was filmed, but it was actually aired during New Years. I would have posted this earlier, except I really, really wanted to find a HQ video of Wang Yuexin singing Guang. Which I did end up finding, but haven’t finished downloading.

With a dolphin pitch, Wang Yuexin’s “Guang” opened the first annual Newcomer’s Feng Yun Bang (Wind and Cloud Awards). In attendance are all of the new boybands as well as most of the new idol singers. Feng Yun awards have been established since 2001, but this is the first ceremony specifically designed for newcomers, signifying that newcomers to the Chinese music scene are coming in large numbers.

Wang Yuexin singing Guang. I practically made this post just for him, so you’d better watch the vid.

Chinese News Batch #2 Music Themed

1. Actress Li Xiaolu has begun promotions for her new EP, Oriental Beauty. I don’t really think she should be singing, but she is promoting woman power and Asian beauty, so I guess that’s a good thing. It certainly makes for pretty pictures. I just love that Qi Pao she’s wearing even if it does seem kind of slutty at the same time. Listen to her song at Youtube or better yet, watch the About Love movie she was in because she was so great in that. Please act more and sing less!

More on Shin’s new MV’s leading lady, Kimi Qiao Renliang’s photoshoot, Chinese Backstreet Boys, an A Lan and Wei Chen duet, and Rainie Yang’s first single below.
