Ethnic minorities in Chinese entertainment: part II

One of them is Han Chinese, can you tell who?

Since the first post on the diverseness of China’s stars, many new artists have came out with their own unique looks and cultural flair.  Several Uyghur artists have especially been taking on more mainstream roles recently, making the face of Chinese entertainment that much prettier.

Something to note amongst these stars is that very few of them are famous because of their ethnicity, but rather due to their general abilities. It’s also something that was brought to my attention in this year’s CCTV Spring Festival Gala. Despite the elimination of the usual group songs by ethnic minorities, this year’s gala had as many if not more ethnic minorities than usual in almost every category of performers, from host Sa Beining to singers like Jin Mei’er and Cai Guoqing and to pop performer Han Geng.

A roundup of Chinese artists who came into the spotlight (or at least my notice) since last post, per suggestion from Benji.

Some lovely stills from the upcoming drama  ”Happiness of an Angel天使的幸福” were recently released, featuring the leads Ming Dao and Liu Shishi reclining on a beach in what has lately become a hotspot for dramas, Hainan Sanya. They respectively star as a doctor (An Jieluo) and a single mother (Li Xiaohan) who triumph over numerous tribulations to finally be together, despite machinations on the part of  An Jieluo’s mother. The cast of this new drama also includes Jones Xu Zhengxi (“Unbeatable” and “Love Waking Up”) and Jessie Chiang, with the two playing a second couple. The “angel” of the story will be played by Tang Zhen, who will be Liu Shishi’s daughter.

Weibo of the day: Hu Ge’s weibo interview with fans

November 23, 2011 | Posted in Mainland China,weibo, Tagged , , ,

More like “weibo’s” of the day.  Actor Hu Ge did a weibo interview today, where he responded to questions on relationships, acting, dreams and clothing options in his latest weibo interview. Some of the exchanges have been translated, with notes in italics by me.
Note that Yu Wentuo and Chen Jingchou are the main male characters in the upcoming drama Xuanyuan Sword: Scar of Heaven, which is produced by and stars Hu Ge as Yu Wentuo. Chen Jingchou, the main character in the original game, is played Hu Ge’s Shanghai Drama and Tangren shidi, newcomer Jiang Junfu.

Q: Like Yu Wentuo, Hu Ge is also a multifaceted person. If you met your other half, which side of you will show her? …..
A: I’ll use my side look to attract her, use my front side to hug her, and use my back side to protect her.

Q: Do you have any pressure due to how similar Lin Gengxin is to you?
A: I don’t have any pressure. The one with pressure should be my dad. Hahaha

Q: Since coming into the acting circle, have you met any roadblocks? Someone that looks like you should be the focal point everywhere, right?
A: How I look is like my business card, what I become is the real me.

Scar of Heaven releases teaser trailer

Wallace Huo left her for Liu Shishi in Strange Hero, so Tang Yan takes comfort in Hu Ge's arms. Scar of Heaven will be Hu Ge and Tang Yan's second project together as lovers.

The leads of Scar of Heaven recently assembled for a press conference, where Shanghai Tangren unveiled a five-minute teaser.

Hu Ge does not rely completely on his face to feed himself. In addition to playing a lead character in Scar of Heaven, Hu Ge has also invested in the series. A host at the conference asked if that meant Hu Ge would have more decision-making power when it came to things like casting, but Hu Ge stated that it was absolutely forbidden to have covert dictations like that. He also said that acting would remain his priority.Like the Chinese Paladin dramas, Scar of Heaven will be directed by Li Guoli. Fans are calling Scar of Heaven and Chinese Paladin “the double swords.”

First time actors Gulnazar and Jiang Junfu join the veteran cast of Chinese Paladin 3 as leads.

First time actors Gulnazar and Jiang Junfu join the veteran cast of Chinese Paladin 3 as leads.

Following the success of Chinese Paladin, Shanghai Tangren moves into a different video game for its upcoming series Sword of the Yellow Emperor: Scar of Heaven 轩辕剑-天之痕. Like Chinese Paladin, Tangren uses newcomers as its leads in addition to the familiar cast of Hu Ge, Liu Shishi and Tang Yan. Current Shanghai Drama Academy (Hu Ge, Yuan Hong, Lin Gengxin, etc.) student Jiang Junfu will play the lead role of Chen Jingqiu. While we have previously been familiarized with Jiang Junfu after his appearance on Happy Camp with Yang Mi, we have only seen the other lead in a 1-min audition clip previously.  New actress Gulnazar who plays opposite Jiang Junfu as the Nvwa descendant XiaoXue. Both Gulnazar and Liu Shishi will both be paired with Jiang Junfu, while Tang Yan will be opposite Hu Ge.

What do you think? Will the new stars shoot to success and take over Cfensi’s TV series tag like the Chinese Paladin stars did?  More pictures below.
