In BBJX, the main character timetravels as her life becomes entangled with that of six princes of the Emperor Kangxi.

Tangren’s 100 million-yuan timetravelling epic Bu Bu Jing Xin released its first MV today. This is Tangren (Chinese Paladin, Fairy from Wonderland, Young Warriors of the Yang Clan, etc.)’s biggest production yet, and features an all-star cast of Liu Shishi, Nicky Wu, Kevin Cheng, Yuan Hong, etc.

Although Hunan TV and Yu Zheng’s Palace took the thunder to become the first Qing dynasty timetravelling series,  Bu Bu Jing Xin, an adaptation of the most popular timetravelling novel in recent years,  hopes to stand its own with a more historically accurate and realistic tale and setting.  The drama finishes filming this week, and will air in the summer.

Modern-dressed Liu Shishi doesn't seem so out of place next to the two Qing princes, but will her modern character Ruoxi be able to do the same?

is week. Starring Liu Shishi as a modern girl, the drama, based on the popular book of the same name, carries the main character into the reign of the Kangxi Emperor and follows her interactions with the various princes. Despite their unfortunate bald heads, the drama features a handsome row of actors, including Nicky Wu (4th Prince), Kevin Cheng (8th), Han Dong (9th), Ye Zuxin (10th, and Tangren’s own Yuan Hong (13th) and Lin Gengxi(14th).

Strange Hero Yi Zhi Mei releases opening theme by Hu Ge, combines manga with wuxia

Wallace Huo, Liu Shishi and Ma Tianyu with their manga figures in the series

As time approaches the airing of Strange Hero Yi Zhi Mei in January, its opening theme by Hu Ge was released. As mentioned before, one specialty of the series is its use of manga strips to illustrate the series, making the wuxia story somewhat like a Western super hero. This is actually the second time production company Tangren has done this, with the first time being Wallace Huo’s 2003 series Westside Story. Coincidentally, the Korean adaptation Iljimae was actually adopted from a Korean manga that took the Ming dynasty tale of Yi Zhi Mei and made him Korean.

Bu Bu Jing Xin steps into a new era of internet novel – based series

Liu Shishi plays a modern girl who accidentally travels back to the Qing dynasty and finds herself caught in a web of love and power struggles.

Ever get bored with the lists of upcoming dramas that end with the words “remake?” Ever wonder why is it that so many recent Chinese dramas have been remakes or re-adaptations?

Until recently, Chinese popular literature was rare. Whereas Japan (and other East Asian nations) could draw back on its mangas as a source for stories, China only found such a source for more light-hearted TV series with its recent boom in pop lit. Luckily, with the advent of the Internet and the recent explosion of internet novels that followed, more and more series are finding their inspiration through those new writings.

Most recently, two popular such adaptations include Du Lala’s Promotions and Summer of Bubbles. And while some adaptations will fail in this stage of trial and error, you can definitely expect to see more dramas based on internet novels. One particularly popular genre has been time-traveling series. It comes no surprise, then, when Bu Bu Xin Jing, one of the first and most popular of the genre, was announced to be made into a series. While this unfortunately is set in the Qing dynasty of shaved heads, more adaptations are certainly to come. Scriptwriter Yu Zheng has already announced the adaptation of Song in the Cloud (云中歌), another novel by the same author that follows the tale of wolf-girl Cloud Song (云歌) as she leaves her home in the deserts to seek her childhood love in the Han capital of Chang’an (Xi’an). I’m beyond excited for that particular adaptation, for not only the way more beautiful clothing, but also the semi-magical realm it creates.

In Bu Bu Jing Xin, Liu Shishi plays a modern girl  who one day woke up as Maertai Ruoxi, the daughter of a high Qing official in the reign of Kangxi. Caught between her love for the doomed 8th prince (Kevin Cheng) and the seemingly cold 4th prince (Nicky Wu), she faces the questions of following her heart or following history. Can she change history with love?  Or should she give up love to stay alive?

Strange Hero Yi Zhi Mei proves its quality by airing movie trailer in theaters

Wallace Huo plays Yi Zhi Mei's leader Li Gexiao, a former royal guard tricked into being an outlaw.

In addition to adding a comic book punch to the classic wuxia legend of Robinhood -like Yi Zhi Mei, Strange Hero Yi Zhi Mei (怪侠一枝梅) furthered its originality by being the first TV series to release an in-theaters film as a 60-min trailer. The drama, starring Wallace Huo, Liu Shishi and Ma Tianyu and airing in January, did so to validate its claims of the high-production quality of the series, showing that its filming is so clear that it holds on the big screen.
