Ethnic minorities in Chinese entertainment: part II
Since the first post on the diverseness of China’s stars, many new artists have came out with their own unique looks and cultural flair. Several Uyghur artists have especially been taking on more mainstream roles recently, making the face of Chinese entertainment that much prettier.
Something to note amongst these stars is that very few of them are famous because of their ethnicity, but rather due to their general abilities. It’s also something that was brought to my attention in this year’s CCTV Spring Festival Gala. Despite the elimination of the usual group songs by ethnic minorities, this year’s gala had as many if not more ethnic minorities than usual in almost every category of performers, from host Sa Beining to singers like Jin Mei’er and Cai Guoqing and to pop performer Han Geng.
A roundup of Chinese artists who came into the spotlight (or at least my notice) since last post, per suggestion from Benji.
Weibo of the day: M.I.C members tease Yaoyao

Real funny guys...
Boyband MIC has five members, but lately in concerts and interviews, only four of the members (Xiaoxin, Wang Hao, Yuehan, Jianci) are present. This is because the fifth member Yaoyao has been whisked away to secret locations in Shenzhen and Australia, to film a drama. The drama is top secret, and the other four boys aren’t spilling the beans. However, a few pictures of Yaoyao on set are available here.
Yaoyao has been gone for a long time and his fellow members really miss him. So, to express their love for him, Xiaoxin, Wang Hao, Yuehan and Jianci all decided to write funny Weibo posts to tease him. Hopefully this will lift Yaoyao’s spirits, for MIC members revealed that shooting the drama has been taking a huge toll on Yaoyao, who is getting only 4 hours of sleep each night.
Translation:
Yaoyao: Watching this makes my whole body itch, how am I supposed to go to sleep now?
Yuehan: We don’t understand your feelings, nor do we want to.
Xiaoxin: Yuehan is right. Why bother talking to you? Don’t come back.
Wang Hao: Yuehan, Xiaoxin, why are you guys being so cruel? By the way, who is this person you’re talking to?
Jianci: Yes!
M.I.C. Releases Their First Album “V”
On 11/11/11, boy group M.I.C., after releasing their immensely popular MV for Get It Hot, released their first album titled “V”. 70% of the songs in the album were written by the members themselves.
Pay The Bill (买单) is a really funky, yet awesome song, and if you can figure out what genre it is, please write it in the comment box. Other notable mentions are member Xiaoxin’s powerful composition Gazing At That Sea (望 That Sea), featuring very powerful rapping from Yaoyao, and captain Wang Hao’s composition Dance With MIC, also with superb rapping from Yaoyao and an extremely cute melody. Another one of Xiaoxin’s composition is You Are So Cute, and in my opinion has the catchiest chorus ever. Acapella fans, you guys are in for a treat, M.I.C. included their acapella version of popular song La Mélodie d’Hélène (心念).
There are many amazing songs I have not listed here, so listen to the whole album on Youtube here.
