Jiang Wen (Director and Actor of 'Let Bullets Fly') and Lead Actor Ge You, Star of all the Christmas Blockbusters

Living up to the anticipation, Jiang Wen’s Let the Bullets Fly took off with both critics and the public alike, with stellar reviews and a great than 9.2 rating at  douban. It also took in a record box office. The  first day tally was 30.18 million RMB, second to only Aftershock‘s opening, and its three day weekend tally was over 100 million RMB.  Next week the film will get an additional release in Sichuanese dialect Mandarin.

Coincidentally,  veteran actor Ge You, still one of the biggest box office draws in China, has a part in three of the big movies being released in theaters before the year ends. The first was the Orphan of Zhao, and next of the list is the  sequel to the 2008 hit romantic comedy, If You Are the One with Shu Qi. This time they are joined by Yao Chen, Sun Honglei and Ady An. The first one broke box office records in China when it was released, and If You Are the One 2 is already making its own mark in history, by being the first film to simultaneously open in China and North America. It will premiere on Dec 2th, in 20 AMC and Cineplex Theatres in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Washington, D.C., Toronto, Vancouver and Ottawa.

Shu Qi and Kelly Lin, arguably Taiwan's two top leading ladies help raise money for Typhoon relief

Natural disasters are always so painful, but one of the nice things is seeing all the people come together to help one another. Jet Li , Andy Lau joined celebrities in Taiwan with answering phones on Friday night as two televised fundraisers brought in more than 1.1 billion Taiwan dollars (33 million US dollars) for aid for the typhoon that is estimated to take 500 lives in Taiwan. In one village, Hsiao Lin suffered a massive landslide where almost no one survived.

The 62nd Cannes Film Festival Comes to a Close

The Cannes Jury, including Shu Qi. They will announce the winner of the Palme d'Or on Sunday, which I'll update the post with.

The 62nd Cannes Film Festival has four films competing that have directors from the Greater China region, as well as one grand jury member and a short film jury member. There was also one Chinese actress who was supposed to be making one of her first appearances in a film after five years of inactivity, but some hack named Tarantino had to make a cut and his film Inglorious Basterds will be all the lesser for the lack of Maggie Cheung, no matter what excuses he gives. Have a litle foresight before you ask someone of her caliber to cameo next time, jerk.

Feng Xiaogang's New Film is still a Comedy

Shu Qi + fake Bear = OTP of this movie

Despite the 1 min 30 sec preview that I posted earlier in my Holiday movie guide, with melancholy scenes of Ge You and Shu Qi together, which ended on a completely sappy note, with Ge You saying to Shu Qi, “I’ve fallen in love with you” making all Feng fans take a step back, this movie is still a comedy. The new preview expands upon where the first left off, revealing what the movie is really like, and it’s really nothing like what that first preview showed. This movie Feng has said, is intended to make the audience smile in a time of financial crisis and with Ge You, Samurai and bears, …I think he can.

I think I actually breathed a sigh of relief after seeing the new trailer. I wasn’t going to watch it if the focus was going to be a saccharine romance between Ge You and Shu Qi. Now if they could only get a more interesting poster.

A row of Chinese starlets

From L-R, China’s Tang Wei, Hong Kong’s Maggie Cheung, Taiwan’s Shu Qi, and Chinese diving star Guo Jingjing sat together at the celebration of the 55th anniversary of a clothing brand. Maggie Cheung and Tang Wei, both proficient in Mandarin, Cantonese and English conversed like old friends and Shu Qi who kept coughing as if she had a cold whispered to Guo Jingjing nonstop. Despite this high possibility of contracting a cold Guo Jingjing kept talking right back, and the two just kept talking incessantly.
