Zhang Ziyi for Marie Claire, works with Tony Leung Chiu Wai for “The Grand Master”

Zhang Ziyi, with a role as a “cold beauty”  in Wong Kar Wai’s “The Grand Master一代宗师”, recently posed for the February issue of Marie Claire. Some pictures under the cut, and the rest of the photo shoot can be seen here.

Zhang Ziyi will be working alongside Tong Leung Chiu Wai, who will play the title character. “The Grand Master”will be Tong Leung’s first kungfu flick and tells the story of martial artist Yip Man. To prepare for the role, Tony Leung underwent extensive training in the “Wing Chun Fist” (this was the fighting style that Yip Man used).  Zhang Ziyi and Song Hye-Kyo also participated in martial arts training for their roles in the film.

See why Leung’s Yip Man has been called the Chinese “Dark Knight” by watching a teaser for the film.

Zhang Ziyi for Harper's Bazaar

I’m guessing most people have seen these pictures already, but I’m going to post them here too because I want a compendium of  photoshoots on this site, and these are so pretty and very Chinese. I won’t be putting up thumbnails much anymore,  because   they take longer to post, and few click anyway, which defies the entire aesthetic point. That also means a higher photoshoot to other content ratio on this site since I can’t lump photoshoots together if they aren’t in thumbnail form. Hopefully that doesn’t overwhelm anyone.

This shoot is part Harper’s Bazaar’s Chinese-themed photoshoots for China’s 60th anniversary. Can’t wait to see what they have in the future. ^^ I think it’s odd that it featured ZZY only after Sophie’s Revenge was out of theaters though, and already available for legal viewing on websites like Sohu. 10 Minutes Behind the Scenes of Sophie's Revenge

The female director, and the ladies of the film talk about the film. Sorry, I have no subs, but you can always look at the pretty sets. I think I’m setting myself up for a great disappointment by looking forward to this film so much, but eh. What’s life without hopes?

The thing is, I really like this film because of the genre (aka fun chick flick), which was rather undeveloped until recently in China, but has endless potential at the moment. I don’t dislike the artsy films of China’s past when I look at them separately, but I also don’t think it speaks well of a film industry to be mainly comprised of those films. There should be a balance, a diversity and China’s slowly (or rapidly?) getting there.

I sort of blab about Zhang Ziyi a bit underneath the cut, so if that doesn’t interest you…

The 12th Shanghai International Film Festival Wraps Up

Sorry, this list is rather randomly organized. OK, now it’s organized.

Tang Yan of the upcoming Stormriders 2 movie (and the CP3 and Pandamen series), posted up pics of her at the ceremony on her blog, along with goofy self-cam pre-redcarpet. This is the only eye-candy related news I have, sorry.

Sophie's Revenge Cast Promote Website Launch

L-R Ruby Lin, Yao Chen, Zhang Ziyi, and Peter Ho

The Chinese/Taiwanese cast members of Sophie’s Revenge minus Fan Bingbing who was probably busy with one of her six upcoming movies, helped launch the official site for the movie yesterday.

Included on the websites is Sophie’s Revenge first teaser trailer. This was released at Cannes, and it did a pretty good job because the rights were sold to five countries. Although it’s not featured here, Cao Xuanbin will be writing the theme song. Can’t wait to see how will make it reflect the feel of this film.

A few more pictures from the launch and some new HQ stills from the movie below. The latter is my real reason for making this post.

The 62nd Cannes Film Festival Comes to a Close

The Cannes Jury, including Shu Qi. They will announce the winner of the Palme d'Or on Sunday, which I'll update the post with.

The 62nd Cannes Film Festival has four films competing that have directors from the Greater China region, as well as one grand jury member and a short film jury member. There was also one Chinese actress who was supposed to be making one of her first appearances in a film after five years of inactivity, but some hack named Tarantino had to make a cut and his film Inglorious Basterds will be all the lesser for the lack of Maggie Cheung, no matter what excuses he gives. Have a litle foresight before you ask someone of her caliber to cameo next time, jerk.

Various Photoshoots

Fan Bingbing recently graced the cover of ELLE magazine, who labeled 2009 as the “Year of Fan Bingbing Movies”, a very apt description. Fan Bingbing starred or will be starring in 7 movies: Shinjuku Incident, Sophie’s Revenge, Wheat, Bodyguards and Assassins, East Wind. Rain, Future Cops and an unnamed one. She’ll also be starring her own production, the drama ,The Last Night of Madame Chin.

We’re including in this post as well, several other photoshoots that we found pretty, but were too lazy to make their own separate posts for. There’s He Zhuoyan who idarklight likes, from the upcoming HSDS adaptation, Sun Feifei, a tv actress who most people seem to like, and Ma Tianyu who we’re curious to see act and pass judgement on. And then there’s Zhang Ziyi, and the director/cast for Nanking! Nanking! who we thank for already giving us ample to  pass judgement on.

Zhang Ziyi in The Horsemen

Stills were released from The Horsemen, the Dennis Quaid thriller with Zhang Ziyi that was delayed and delayed, which usually means that the film is bad. This film is probably no exception, but you can check out the first look from it anyway.

Zhang Ziyi on the cover of South Korean Vogue Magazine

Weird…I thought that South Korea only got its first Korean star on Vogue’s cover last year when Song Hyegyo was on it, so what’s Zhang Ziyi doing on there? It’s odd timing too. The only new movie she has coming out soon is Mei Lan Fang and I didn’t think that would be the type to cross over to other countries, even other other Asian countries. Maybe it has something to be with her Chinese-South Korean joint production under CJ entertainment but that hasn’t even started filming. It’s just odd. More pictures here although they are only photos of the magazine, and they’re not very interesting. Photography by Oh Joong Seok.
