Architectural beauty of the Tang showcased in Phoenix Totem

PHoenix Totem

The splendor of the Daming Palace recreated in Phoenix Totem

The team that had recreated the largest palace complex in the world - Daming Palace – is back to recreate it in the drama Phoenix Totem. The splendor the short-lived palace, much grander than that of the Forbidden Palace, was complimented with hundreds of screen prints that embellishes the set of the drama.   Unfortunately, the gorgeous set and wonderful Han-Shuang pairing were marred by the poor camera and lighting and a poor supporting cast that took over most of the show. I would suggest watching a Zheng Shuang cut for the cuteness, or a scenery cut for the CGI.

Alternatively, this is an opportunity to pimp the beautiful drama/documentary Daming Palace. Watch the English-subbed film version here, or the more complete HD but not subbed miniseries version here. It is an absolutely beautiful piece of work that is no less entrancing than any drama.

In one of the largest TV arts projects ever,  Phoenix Totem 凰图腾‘s art director Dong Chengguang chose to use hundreds of screen paintings to decorate the set so as to let light shine through the rooms and create the atmosphere for the film.  The screen paintings, including of people, scenery, etc.  decorate each character’s dwellings depending on their personality.

Our “Phoenix Totem” art department painted hundreds of screen paintings … “Phoenix Totem” cast actress Zheng Shuang would come to the art department to help us paint whenever she has time. Zheng Shuang is so talented and a pretty good painter!

The series premiers today on Hunan TV. Can you tell which screens are by Zheng Shuang?

eeMedia artists sing theme songs for Phoenix Totem

Phoenix Totem - Zhang Han and Zheng Shuang

Meteor Shower's Zhang Han and Zheng Shuang travel to the Tang for a brother-sister relationship in their first ancient drama together.

One of the best things about a music company producing dramas is their wonderful OST’s, and this year’s major production Phoenix Totem 凰图腾 for eeMedia is no different. Produced by Yan Yidan (Meteor Shower, Bu Bu Jing Xin, etc.), the three theme songs for Phoenix Totem are sung by Li Wei, Yang Yang, Wu Yi and Huang Ying.

Starring Meteor Shower leads Zhang Han and Zheng Shuang, The Myth’s Bai Bing, and Zhang Mo, and directed by the director of the 1983 Legend of Condor Heroes,  the series tells of

Although Huang YIng is my favorite singer of the four, I must admit the other two songs are much better. What do you think?

The end of the earth occurred too often,
and forever came too soon
Slice a beam of light, through the makeup of the sky,
and it can’t shine through the facade of lies,
are you like me, once promised, unable to forget?

-Promise by Li Wei and Yang Yang

The Peony fairy played by Zheng Shuang brings the audience to her fairy world

Of the a hundred fairies in the fantasyland of Painted Mural, one fairy stood out to almost all the viewers as the most beautiful of them all.  My Own Swordsman’s scriptwriter Ning Caishen called her a goddess and his new idol after seeing the film, and Huang Xiaoming’s manager and the producer of the Orphan of Zhao  complimented her ability to stand out in the film with her natural cuteness.    In a film that stars the adorable real-life couple of Deng Chao and Sun Li, it was eventually the Peony Fairy played by Zheng Shuang who captured everyone’s hearts and filled all the weibo tweets.

In her first big screen role,  Zheng Shuang plays the playful, innocent but determined Peony fairy.  It is she who  brought Deng Chao into fairyland, and she who brings him back again.  The adventure both begins with her appearance and ends with her smile.  According to  director Gordon Chan, her scenes were so well-done that they included way more scenes of her than planned.

Pictures of her in the film below and watch her segment of behind the scenes and film clips here.

Zheng Shuang plays the boyish and ambitious Princess Taiping

When Meteor Shower’s comedic Zhu Zixiao pairs up with the cute Zheng Shuang, while her true love Zhang Han becomes her nephew;   When her mother is played by a girl only three years older, and one of her enemies is played by the star of the first 3D porn film;  Welcome to the crazy but amazing world of the currently-filming Secret History of Princess Taiping series. I’m just really confused by the casting, despite loving most of the actors/actresses, what do you think? (more…)

“The Secret History of Princess Taiping” starts filming, will star Alyssa Chia in a dual role

The faces of the cast members for "Secret History of Princess Taiping."

“The Secret History of Wu Zetian (武则天秘史)” hasn’t even been released yet, but a sequel of sorts is already starting to gear up. The filming of “The Secret History of Princess Taiping (太平公主秘史)”  began on the twenty-eighth. The drama will tell the story of Wu Zetian’s daughter, Princess Taiping. (Wikipedia’s article here can give you a pretty good idea about the historical personage.)

Olympic opening ceremony’s star Lin Miaoke will be the child princess, while the teenage Princess Taiping will be played by Zheng Shuang, who continues the role from “The Secret History of Wu Zetian”. Alyssa Chia takes over when the princess reaches her late teens. She will also be playing Princess Taiping’s estranged sister, Princess Angong. It’s said that in order to get rid of her husband’s first empress, Wu Zetian killed her first daughter and accused the empress of murder. This new drama plays a twist on history in that the girl survives and is smuggled out of the palace. Incidentally, she looks exactly like her sister Princess Taiping. Lu Hong from the New My Fair Princess 还珠格格 will play one of the princess’ husbands, Xue Shao. Emperor Li Longji will be Zhang Han. Wu Zetian will be played by two actresses, Liu Yuxin (Bu Bu Xin Jing) and host Li Xiang. Sun Yaoqi, also from the New My Fair princess, will play Shangguan Wan’er. Sammul Chan plays a Tibetan prince.
