Zhou Xun on a recent environmental issue of Fashion Bazzar

Last week, actress Zhou Xun, along with Huayi Brothers and the United Nations, revealed their English- Chinese comic book promoting environmentalism. The first 100,000 copies of the book, featuring 16 popular artists from mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong, will be distributed to schools for free.

The project has been a two-year dream of Zhou Xun’s, who has continuously been active in various environmental causes and was named a Champion of the Earth by the U.N. earlier this year for her efforts.

“To me, environmental protection brings me happiness in all aspects of my life. I do not feel it is an obligation, but rather a personal responsibility that leaves me feeling fulfilled. I hope with this comic book, such happiness can be shared with all readers. I also hope children around the world will have the opportunity to read it, so that they will start protecting our Earth and the environment,” Zhou Xun said.

Huayi Brothers President Wang Zhonglei, who was also present at the press release, said that Huayi has also produced a cartoon about environmentalism this year.

Zhou Xun plays a nail-clip eater in the first of four high-budget mini-movies released on sina

Internet series and movies are often synonymous with low-budget and poor-quality, but two new releases this month shows how Chinese internet companies are making big budget productions just for the computer screen.

This month, Tudou (China’s number one streaming site and the world’s most trafficked streaming site per day) released the first of three internet dramas it sponsored -  欢迎爱光临 That love comes starring Joe Cheng,  Li Fei’er and model Pei Bei. Though the plot is slow and cliched, the high budget is shown in the choice of the actors and the cinematography.  Meanwhile, Sina released the first of four short films by director Peng Haoxiang. The first film, titled 指甲刀人魔 nail clipper monster, stars Zhou Xun, and the second film, 假戏真作, stars Stanley Huang.

Ady An Celebrates Birthday on “If You Are The One 2″ Set; Next ‘Hua Yi’ Leading Lady?

Two days ago was  actress Ady An Yixuan‘s birthday, and also the last day for filming on the set of her new movie, “If You Are the One 2″, the sequel to the Feng Xiaogang-directed 2008 blockbuster. Having heard she had not celebrated with her birthday on a film/drama set for 6 years, the cast and crew specially prepared a cake for her. Also celebrating with her was Wang Zhonglei, the CEO of Hua Yi, her management company and Feng Xiaogang, the director, a longtime friend of Ady’s.

With the news of Hua Yi’s top actress Zhou Xun leaving  just a week before, many questions were raised. One was if Zhou Xun‘s reason for leaving also had something to due with best friend Chen Kun amiably leaving his own company of many years (headed by Li Shaohong). It was rumored that the two might start their own company together. The other question posed was who would fill the vacancy left in Hua Yi as one of their top actresses. Ady has been recently tackling film roles, and while in “If You Are the One 2″ she  only plays a supporting character next to Shu Qi‘s leading lady, it is one of her most high profile  film roles to date and suggests that the importance of her future roles in film may steadily increase.

Don't look at Zhou Xun, Look at Qinghai TV - Actress Zhou Xun is the green spokesperson for the new Qinghai TV.

Every Asian drama needs a Cinderella-like makeover, and it’s no different in the rest of the TV world. Today, our heroine is Qinghai Satellite TV, the  fairy godmother is Hunan Broadcasting Systems (GBS) , and the new wardrobe is green.

With its own owner GBS, Qinghai TV will start over on the 26th with a completely new set of programs, a new logo, and a new slogan -  “Beautify Qinghai, Greenify China,” making it the first Chinese station to embrace environmentalism in its aim.

“A green life brings us healthy bodies, and a green spirit brings us healthy souls. I hope that while “Our Part” and Qinghai TV works to promote green lifestyles, we can also bring green into people’s lives,” said actress Zhou Xun, Qinghai TV’s green spokesperson.

The channel’s purchase by GBS in January is also part of GBS’s ambition to form a large media powerhouse in China. By March, Qinghai TV, last year’s second least viewed Chinese satellite channel,  expanded viewership by 174% from last December.

Zhou Xun also visited an elephant nursery for elephants who often became orphans due to proachers.

Zhou Xun feed a baby elephant. More and more elephants are being orphaned due to poachers and habitat destruction.

Last week, Zhou Xun and Alec Su  visited the Beijing Elementary  in Mathare, the seconde poorest quarter in Kenya’s capital, to bring necessities and supplies for school, and studied with the children. A third of the student population is consisted of orphans, and another third from single-parent families. The school was renamed Beijing Elementary in thanks of a $25000 donation by the Chinese embassy in Kenya. The principal explained  this school has not only granted many children the privilege of being educated, but made sure that they had smaller risk of contracting AIDS, being sold or become child laborers. He hoped that there will be lasting friendship between China and Africa.

Zhou Xun visited first grade, and her arrival brought excitement among children. They gathered around her to share videos and play games together. Alec Su went to a higher grade, and taught children some basic Chinese, and sung songs with them. During the donation, Zhou Xun, Alec Su, and other representatives  also distributed  supplies to the children around them.

At the end of this activity, the group picked up paper boxes and packagings around them. Zhou said, “Paper boxes, bags, and such are some of the biggest sources of white pollution. Although this trip is meant to support the elementary, we should still remain aware of protecting the environment. This is also a way to clean up after ourselves and thus showing our love and support for the staff and children at the school”

The two also planted trees in an UN forest, and visited a nursery for orphaned elephants. After hearing their company  – Huayi Brothers – had adopted 100 wells for the Southwestern Drought Relief, Zhou Xun also expressed wishes to participate in the program.

Zhou Xun and Alec Su  expressed that charity is not a simple one-time act, and that we all should do our share to support those that are less fortunate, and gather attention from more parts of the society to education issues and environmental issues in areas of poverty.
